Environmental Specialist Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an environmental specialist job in Houston?
The most direct path in Houston is targeting the oil and gas and petrochemical sectors, which generate the heaviest environmental compliance and remediation workload in the region. Roles concentrate in the Energy Corridor, along the Ship Channel, and in Greenspoint. Candidates with air quality permitting, SPCC plan experience, or hazardous waste management credentials stand out most with Houston-area industrial employers and environmental consulting firms.
Which companies hire environmental specialists in Houston?
Companies currently hiring environmental specialists in Houston include NRG Energy, Targa Resources, and Williams Wpc-I, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's hiring base runs from major integrated energy companies and chemical manufacturers to regional environmental consulting firms and federal contractors serving the Gulf Coast.
Are there remote environmental specialist jobs in Houston?
Yes, but only for the desk-based portions of the role, since fieldwork, site inspections, and regulatory sampling are inherently on-site. About 0% of environmental specialist openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, mostly covering report writing, data analysis, and permit coordination. Fully remote roles are most common at consulting firms managing multi-site projects from a Houston office.
How can I get an environmental specialist job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is through environmental consulting firms that staff Gulf Coast industrial site assessments and Phase I or Phase II studies, where field technician and junior analyst roles regularly open. Targeting firms supporting the Ship Channel or Energy Corridor refineries gives you exposure to high-demand specialties fast. A degree in environmental science, geology, or chemistry combined with any OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification moves a Houston entry-level resume to the top.
Which industries hire the most environmental specialists in Houston?
Houston environmental specialist roles concentrate in Energy, Technology & Software, and Consulting & Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's status as the U.S. energy capital means oil and gas operations, refining, and petrochemical manufacturing produce a sustained base of compliance, remediation, and permitting demand that few other metro areas can match.
