Field Application Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a field application engineer in California?
Most field application engineers in California are hired on the strength of an engineering degree and hands-on technical experience rather than a state-issued license. A bachelor's in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related discipline is the standard entry point. Employers in California's semiconductor and defense corridors place particular weight on lab experience, familiarity with relevant hardware or software platforms, and the ability to support customers through complex technical problems independently.
How much do field application engineers make in California?
Field application engineers in California earn a median of about $139,160 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $78,850 for the lowest 10% to over $213,370 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire field application engineers in California?
Employers hiring field application engineers in California right now include NXP Semiconductors, Siemens, and Broadcom, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's density of semiconductor headquarters, defense contractors, and medical device manufacturers means demand for field application engineers is distributed across both large enterprise employers and well-funded growth-stage companies.
Which California cities have the most field application engineer jobs?
San Jose, Santa Clara, and Fremont have the most field application engineer openings in California. San Jose anchors the market through its concentration of semiconductor and EDA companies, San Diego draws heavily from defense electronics and wireless firms, and Los Angeles reflects demand from aerospace contractors and consumer electronics brands with significant regional engineering operations.
Are there remote field application engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. The role is fundamentally customer-facing and often requires on-site visits to labs, design centers, and manufacturing floors, which limits full remote arrangements significantly. About 21% of field application engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid schedules most common for roles supporting software-centric or cloud-integrated product lines rather than physical hardware.
How can I get hired as a field application engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an applications engineering internship or a junior technical support role at a semiconductor or systems company. Large California employers including Broadcom and Qualcomm run structured new-grad and rotational programs that move early-career engineers through product support, customer engineering, and field roles. Candidates coming from adjacent positions such as hardware test engineer, technical support engineer, or product validation engineer frequently transition into field application engineering once they build customer-facing experience.
Where can I find and apply to field application engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to field application engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries and experience levels. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly to the ones that match.
