Field Engineer Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a field engineer in Massachusetts?
Most field engineer roles in Massachusetts require a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering from an accredited program. While Massachusetts does not mandate a state-issued professional engineer license for most private-sector field engineer positions, those performing licensed engineering work must register with the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Employers in defense, life sciences, and energy sectors typically also expect relevant certifications and demonstrated hands-on technical experience.
Which companies hire field engineers in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring field engineers in Massachusetts right now include Apex Companies, Symbotic, and Oxford Instruments, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Massachusetts's concentration of defense contractors, medical device manufacturers, and energy infrastructure companies means field engineer openings appear consistently across both large employers and specialized regional firms.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most field engineer jobs?
Boston, Marlborough, and Massachusetts are the Massachusetts cities with the most field engineer openings. Boston drives volume through its dense cluster of life sciences, technology, and healthcare employers, while Waltham and Lowell attract openings from defense contractors and advanced manufacturing companies that have long maintained engineering campuses in those suburban corridors.
Are there remote field engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, but they're rare. Field engineering is fundamentally a hands-on, on-site discipline, so fully remote roles represent a small share of the market. About 46% of field engineer openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those tend to be project coordination, technical support, or pre-sales engineering roles rather than positions requiring physical installation or commissioning work.
How can I get hired as a field engineer in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a field service technician or junior systems engineer role, which large Massachusetts employers in defense and life sciences regularly staff with recent engineering graduates. Companies such as Raytheon Technologies and GE Vernova run structured new-graduate programs that rotate candidates through field assignments. Pursuing a Certified Field Technician credential and building hands-on experience through co-ops at Massachusetts engineering schools also gives candidates a measurable edge with local hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to field engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to field engineer jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current Massachusetts openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and target location, and apply directly to the employer through the listing.
