Field Service Technician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a field service technician in California?
The most direct path is completing an associate degree or certificate program in electronics technology, electromechanical systems, or industrial maintenance at a California community college, such as those offered through the California Community Colleges system. California does not require a single statewide license for the general field service technician role, but specific concentrations do carry credential requirements, including a California Electrical Certification for work on electrical systems or an EPA Section 608 certification for HVAC-related equipment service.
Which companies hire field service technicians in California?
Employers hiring field service technicians in California right now include Mainspring Energy, Rivian, and Clean Harbors, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of semiconductor fabs, medical device manufacturers, and clean energy companies means field service roles here tend to be more specialized and technically demanding than the national average.
Which California cities have the most field service technician jobs?
San Jose, Los Angeles, and San Francisco have the most field service technician openings in California. The San Jose and greater Silicon Valley area drives the largest share of demand, anchored by semiconductor equipment and life sciences companies headquartered there, while Los Angeles and San Diego generate strong volume through aerospace, medical device, and expanding clean energy sectors.
Are there remote field service technician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Field service technician work is inherently hands-on and site-based, so most roles require physical presence at customer locations. About 11% of field service technician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are typically in technical support, remote diagnostics, or service coordination rather than direct equipment repair.
How can I get hired as a field service technician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a certificate program at a California community college and targeting junior field technician or field service associate roles, which large California employers like Siemens and Thermo Fisher Scientific regularly post alongside their senior openings. Lateral moves from roles like electronics assembler, biomedical equipment technician trainee, or HVAC maintenance helper are common entry points. Holding an EPA Section 608 certification or a CompTIA A-plus credential gives candidates a measurable edge over others without prior field experience.
Where can I find and apply to field service technician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to field service technician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries including semiconductor equipment, medical devices, clean energy, and industrial automation.
