Finance Director Jobs in San Francisco: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a finance director job in San Francisco?
The strongest path in San Francisco is building deep exposure to high-growth technology or fintech companies, where most local demand concentrates. Controllers and senior finance managers at Series B and C startups in SoMa and Mission Bay regularly step into director roles as those companies scale. Candidates who can speak to capital raises, board reporting, and unit economics stand out in this market over those with purely operational backgrounds.
Which companies hire finance directors in San Francisco?
San Francisco finance director roles are posted by Airwallex, Lyft, and CRUSOE and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. The local market includes a dense mix of venture-backed startups, publicly traded technology firms, regional health systems, and financial services companies headquartered in or near the Financial District.
Are there remote finance director jobs in San Francisco?
Yes, though finance director roles are less remote than individual-contributor finance positions because they require close collaboration with executive teams and boards. About 57% of finance director openings tied to San Francisco are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements being far more common than fully remote. Strategic and analytical work, such as FP&A oversight and investor reporting, tends to be the most location-flexible part of the role.
How can I get a finance director job in San Francisco with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving through senior manager or controller roles at San Francisco's mid-stage startups, which often promote faster than large corporations. Companies in SoMa and the Financial District hiring for Series A through C growth frequently need finance managers who can grow with the business. Building experience in equity compensation accounting, GAAP close cycles, and board deck preparation gives candidates a concrete edge when applying for their first director title locally.
Which industries hire the most finance directors in San Francisco?
Most finance director openings in San Francisco sit in Technology & Software, Banking & Financial Services, and Education, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. San Francisco's concentration of venture capital, technology headquarters, and regional healthcare networks makes those sectors the primary drivers of local finance director hiring throughout the year.
