Financial Counselor Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a financial counselor in California?
Becoming a financial counselor in California typically begins with a bachelor's degree in finance, social work, or a related field, followed by a nationally recognized credential such as the Accredited Financial Counselor designation through the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education. California does not issue a state-specific financial counselor license, but healthcare employers often require a Certified Patient Account Representative credential. Completing a supervised internship at a California hospital, credit union, or nonprofit consumer credit agency provides the practical hours most employers expect before hiring.
Which companies hire financial counselors in California?
Employers hiring financial counselors in California right now include Prime Healthcare Services, Loma Linda University Health, and UCLA Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated health systems and its deep network of federally chartered credit unions generate the most consistent year-round demand for this role across the state.
Which California cities have the most financial counselor jobs?
Lynwood, Loma Linda, and Los Angeles have the most financial counselor openings in California right now. Los Angeles and San Francisco concentrate the bulk of postings through major hospital networks and large financial institutions headquartered there, while Sacramento draws steady demand from state government health programs and regional credit unions that serve the Central Valley.
Are there remote financial counselor jobs in California?
Yes, and they are more common than in many counseling fields because much of the work, reviewing budgets, explaining payment options, and processing assistance applications, happens over phone or video without requiring an in-person visit. About 18% of financial counselor openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. Patient financial counseling and consumer credit counseling roles at large health systems and nonprofit agencies account for the largest share of those flexible arrangements.
How can I get hired as a financial counselor in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a patient financial services representative or billing associate role at a California hospital or large medical group, where on-the-job training replaces prior counseling experience. Kaiser Permanente and the University of California health campuses both run structured new-hire programs that bring in candidates from adjacent roles like medical billing coordinator or social services assistant. Earning an entry-level credential such as the Certified Credit Counselor designation from the NFCC while working in a support role demonstrates commitment and gives candidates a measurable edge when applying for full counselor positions.
Where can I find and apply to financial counselor jobs in California?
