Billing Clerk Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a billing clerk in California?
Most California employers hire billing clerks with a high school diploma plus billing or accounting coursework from a community college. California has no state-issued license for general billing clerks, but earning a Certified Professional Biller credential through the American Academy of Professional Coders strengthens your application considerably, especially in healthcare. Community colleges throughout the state offer billing and coding certificate programs that align directly with what local employers require.
Which companies hire billing clerks in California?
Employers hiring billing clerks in California right now include Family Health Centers of San Diego, LERETA, and TPC Plastics, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Healthcare networks, county government agencies, and large logistics firms across California are among the most consistent sources of billing clerk openings in the state.
Which California cities have the most billing clerk jobs?
Chula Vista, Downey, and Pomona have the most billing clerk openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its dense concentration of hospital systems, insurance carriers, and county agencies, while San Diego and Sacramento draw volume from major healthcare campuses, military contractor billing departments, and state government offices headquartered there.
Are there remote billing clerk jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 25% of billing clerk openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how well the work translates to a fully digital workflow. Medical billing, accounts receivable follow-up, and insurance claims processing are the billing clerk functions most commonly offered as remote roles by California employers.
How can I get hired as a billing clerk in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for patient access associate or accounts receivable assistant roles at California hospital systems such as Dignity Health or UCSF Health, which regularly hire entry-level staff and provide on-the-job billing training. Completing a billing and coding certificate at a California community college gives you a clear edge, and lateral moves from front desk coordinator or medical receptionist positions at clinics commonly lead directly into billing roles.
Where can I find and apply to billing clerk jobs in California?
