Assist external tax advisors and auditors with required documentation and analysis.
3. Manage Audit Defense & Regulatory Inquiries
Serve as the primary operational lead in responding to tax notices, audits, and inquiries from federal and state tax authorities, drafting technically sound and timely responses in coordination with external advisors. Track all open correspondence and audit activity to ensure disciplined resolution management and no lapsed response obligations.
5. Collaborate Cross-Functionally as a Trusted Tax Advisor
Partner with Accounting, FP&A, Legal, and Operations to gather data, assess tax implications of business initiatives, and deliver guidance that helps the broader organization make well-informed decisions. Support data requests related to Medicare Advantage operations, including those tied to regulatory filings, enrollment reconciliations, and financial audits.
6. Conduct Tax Research & Monitor Legislative Developments
Research current and emerging tax legislation, IRS guidance, and state law changes that may affect the organization's tax obligations or strategic positioning, translating complex developments into actionable summaries for finance and executive leadership. Coordinate with external tax advisors on technical positions, ruling requests, and complex issues that require specialized counsel.

Tax Analyst Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax analyst in California?
Most tax analyst roles in California require a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, and many employers prefer candidates who hold or are pursuing a CPA license issued through the California Board of Accountancy. The path typically starts with a degree, followed by gaining experience in public accounting or a corporate tax department. Passing the Uniform CPA Exam strengthens candidacy for mid-level and senior roles, though entry-level positions are available without it.
Which companies hire tax analysts in California?
Employers hiring tax analysts in California right now include CohnReznick, Amazon, and Alvarez & Marsal, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters and large financial services firms means a consistent pipeline of openings at both public accounting firms and in-house corporate tax departments.
Which California cities have the most tax analyst jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego have the most tax analyst openings in California. The distribution reflects where corporate headquarters, major financial institutions, and large technology companies are based, with Los Angeles drawing heavily from entertainment and media conglomerates while the Bay Area's concentration of tech firms drives sustained demand in San Francisco and San Jose.
Are there remote tax analyst jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. Tax analysis is a desk-based, document-driven role that translates well to remote work. About 26% of tax analyst openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how widely employers have accepted distributed arrangements for this function. Federal and state compliance work, transfer pricing analysis, and tax research are the tasks most commonly performed fully remote.
How can I get hired as a tax analyst in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a staff tax associate or tax internship role at a Big Four or regional accounting firm with California offices, such as those headquartered in Los Angeles or San Francisco. Large California-based corporations also run structured new-graduate programs in their tax departments. Candidates coming from adjacent roles such as accounts payable analyst, financial analyst, or bookkeeper gain a measurable edge, and sitting for the CPA exam while applying signals long-term commitment to California employers.
Where can I find and apply to tax analyst jobs in California?
You can find and apply to tax analyst jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Find roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to each employer through the listing.
