Tips for Your Financial Counselor Job Search
Tailor your resume for each sector
A financial counselor resume for a hospital system reads differently than one for a credit union. Highlight client-facing case volume, specific populations you've served, and any regulatory frameworks you've worked within, whether HIPAA, HUD, or FDCPA.
Lead with certifications front and center
Credentials like AFC, NFCC certification, or CCUFC are gatekeepers on many job listings. Place them in your resume header or a dedicated section above your work history so hiring managers don't have to hunt for them.
Target openings by client population
Financial counselor roles are often scoped by the people served: veterans, college students, low-income households, or medical patients. Filter your search by these terms to find listings that match your actual experience and avoid wasted applications.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists financial counselor openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for scenario-based interview questions
Interviewers frequently walk you through a client case and ask how you'd handle it, such as a household in debt crisis or a student with incomplete FAFSA data. Practice structuring your answers around assessment, options, and follow-through steps.
Negotiate beyond base pay
Many financial counselor roles in nonprofits and public institutions offer student loan repayment assistance, flexible hours, or professional development stipends that aren't listed upfront. Ask about these specifically once you have an offer in hand.
Financial Counselor Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most financial counselors?
The companies hiring the most financial counselors right now include PruittHealth, Trinity Health, and Orlando Health, with the largest share of openings in Pennsylvania, Florida, and Massachusetts, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Healthcare systems, credit unions, and nonprofit housing agencies consistently account for a large portion of postings nationwide.
How many financial counselor jobs are remote?
About 10% of financial counselor openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote availability varying significantly by employer type and client population. Roles focused on telephone-based debt counseling, student loan advising, and financial coaching for employer wellness programs tend to have the highest share of remote and hybrid arrangements.
How do you become a financial counselor?
Start by earning a bachelor's degree in a field like finance, social work, psychology, or counseling, as most employers treat this as a baseline requirement. From there, gain direct client-facing experience through entry-level roles, internships, or community service positions. Pursuing an Accredited Financial Counselor credential from AFCPE strengthens your candidacy considerably and is required by many specialized employers.
Can you get hired as a financial counselor with little experience?
Yes, entry-level financial counselor roles exist, particularly in nonprofit credit counseling agencies, university financial aid offices, and military family support programs, all of which frequently hire and train candidates without extensive prior experience. Demonstrating strong interpersonal skills, comfort discussing sensitive financial situations, and any relevant volunteer or internship work will carry significant weight at this stage of your career.
What does the financial counselor interview process look like?
Most financial counselor interviews include an initial phone screen focused on your background and credential status, followed by one or two in-person or video rounds. Expect behavioral questions about handling difficult client conversations and scenario-based questions where you walk through how you'd assess a client's financial situation. Some employers add a practical exercise, such as reviewing a mock budget or case file, before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to financial counselor jobs?
You can find and apply to financial counselor jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, credentials, and preferred setting, then apply directly to each one that fits.
