Financial Counselor Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a financial counselor in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania does not require a single state-issued license for financial counselors, but most employers expect a bachelor's degree in finance, social work, or counseling alongside a recognized certification such as the Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC) credential or the Certified Credit Counselor (CCC) designation. Counselors working in nonprofit credit counseling agencies registered in Pennsylvania must ensure their employer holds a credit counseling license issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities.
Which companies hire financial counselors in Pennsylvania?
Companies currently hiring financial counselors in Pennsylvania include JLAN Solutions, UPMC, and Magellan Health, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pennsylvania's large healthcare networks and public universities are consistently among the most active sources of financial counselor openings in the state.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most financial counselor jobs?
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Reading have the most financial counselor openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia leads because of its concentration of major hospital systems, universities, and nonprofit credit counseling agencies, while Pittsburgh's strength in healthcare and financial services anchors demand there, and Harrisburg draws openings from state government agencies and regional insurance carriers.
Are there remote financial counselor jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles, since financial counseling work centers on phone and video consultations, document review, and case management that translates well to remote settings. About 33% of financial counselor openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how well the role adapts to distributed work. Student loan counseling and consumer debt advising positions tend to be the most consistently remote.
How can I get hired as a financial counselor in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for patient financial advocate or financial counselor associate roles at Pennsylvania's large healthcare systems, particularly UPMC, Penn Medicine, and Tower Health, which regularly hire candidates without prior counseling experience and provide on-the-job training. A degree in social work, finance, or a related field, or enrollment in an AFC certification program, gives candidates a clear edge. Adjacent roles such as billing specialist, benefits coordinator, or case manager at hospitals or nonprofits also serve as common stepping stones into a dedicated counseling position.
