Finance Director Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a finance director job in Chicago?
The strongest path into a Chicago finance director role runs through the city's dominant sectors: financial services firms clustered in the Loop, large health systems on the Near North Side, and corporate headquarters spread across the suburbs from Oak Brook to Schaumburg. Candidates who combine CPA credentials or an MBA with demonstrated FP&A or controllership experience stand out, and networking through the Illinois CPA Society and local CFO roundtables opens doors that postings alone won't.
Which companies hire finance directors in Chicago?
Chicago finance director roles are posted by Fitch Ratings, ZS, and PwC and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's mix of Fortune 500 headquarters, major regional health systems, and mid-market private equity-backed companies means demand is broad and consistent across both publicly traded corporations and privately held firms.
Are there remote finance director jobs in Chicago?
Yes, though finance director roles are less remote-friendly than purely analytical positions because they typically involve direct oversight of teams, auditors, and board-level reporting. About 66% of finance director openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with most flexibility concentrated in the strategic planning and reporting components of the role rather than day-to-day operations management.
How can I get a finance director job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving through a senior manager or controller role at a Chicago mid-market company or one of the city's large nonprofit organizations, which tend to offer faster advancement than Fortune 500 firms. Targeting growing firms in Fulton Market's tech and healthcare sectors, or private equity portfolio companies based in Chicago, accelerates the timeline. A CPA license and exposure to ERP systems like SAP or Workday are the credentials that convert controller-level experience into director-level conversations locally.
Which industries hire the most finance directors in Chicago?
The sectors hiring the most finance directors in Chicago are Consulting & Professional Services, Sports & Recreation, and Investment & Asset Management, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's role as a national hub for commodities trading, insurance, and healthcare administration means these industries maintain consistent director-level finance demand well above the national average.
