Becoming a tax consultant in Illinois typically starts with a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, followed by sitting for the CPA exam administered through the Illinois Board of Examiners under the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. While a CPA license is not always required for every tax consultant role, it is the credential Illinois employers most consistently favor for advancement and client-facing work. Some positions also accept candidates who hold an Enrolled Agent designation issued by the IRS.
How much do tax consultants make in Illinois?
Tax consultants in Illinois earn a median of about $54,480 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $33,030 for the lowest 10% to over $76,150 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax consultants in Illinois?
Employers hiring tax consultants in Illinois right now include Deloitte, Savant Wealth Management, and RÖDL USA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's deep base of Fortune 500 headquarters, regional accounting firms, and manufacturing and financial services companies means ongoing demand across both public accounting and in-house corporate tax teams.
Which Illinois cities have the most tax consultant jobs?
Chicago and Saint Charles have the most tax consultant openings in Illinois. Chicago drives the largest share of listings, anchored by the city's concentration of Big Four offices, financial institutions, and corporate headquarters, while Schaumburg and Naperville reflect the dense suburban corporate corridor along the I-90 and I-88 corridors, where mid-market manufacturers and professional services firms regularly hire for tax roles.

Yes, and more than most fields. Tax consulting is largely analytical and documentation-based work that transfers well to remote environments. About 80% of tax consultant openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how broadly firms have adopted flexible arrangements post-pandemic. Research, compliance review, and return preparation roles tend to be the most remote-compatible, while client advisory and audit-support work typically requires occasional in-office or client-site presence.
How can I get hired as a tax consultant in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a staff tax associate or tax analyst role at a regional or mid-size Illinois accounting firm, where new graduates are commonly hired into structured training programs. Large Chicago-based offices of firms like Grant Thornton and RSM run formal new-graduate onboarding tracks each fall. Candidates transitioning from bookkeeping, payroll processing, or financial analyst roles find those backgrounds transfer well. Sitting for the CPA exam, even before passing, signals commitment and strengthens applications significantly.
