Financial Advisor Jobs in Minnesota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a financial advisor in Minnesota?
You become a financial advisor in Minnesota by earning a bachelor's degree, passing the FINRA Series 7 General Securities Representative exam, and then completing either the Series 66 (which covers both state law and investment advising) or both the Series 63 and Series 65. Investment adviser representatives working with a registered firm must register through the Minnesota Department of Commerce. Most Minnesota employers sponsor exam prep and require candidates to pass within a set onboarding window.
Which companies hire financial advisors in Minnesota?
Companies currently hiring financial advisors in Minnesota include Northwestern Mutual, Baird, and 49 Financial, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Minnesota's status as the headquarters of Ameriprise Financial and Securian Financial means the state consistently produces more advisor openings than its population alone would suggest.
Which Minnesota cities have the most financial advisor jobs?
Minneapolis, Duluth, and Plymouth account for the largest share of financial advisor openings in Minnesota. The Twin Cities dominate because that is where the headquarters of Ameriprise, Securian, and RBC Wealth Management are located, while Rochester draws demand from the wealth planning needs of Mayo Clinic staff and affiliated medical professionals, and Duluth supports a smaller but steady regional market tied to its port economy and healthcare sector.
Are there remote financial advisor jobs in Minnesota?
Yes, though they are less common than in purely analytical fields because client relationship-building is central to the role. About 50% of financial advisor openings tied to Minnesota are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting a market that has moved toward flexible models for experienced advisors with established books of business. Entirely remote positions tend to appear most often in financial planning support, paraplanning, and virtual advice roles rather than full client-facing advisor positions.
How can I get hired as a financial advisor in Minnesota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a licensed financial advisor trainee or associate advisor program at one of the large Minnesota-based firms. Ameriprise Financial and Securian Financial both run structured new-advisor development programs in the Twin Cities that combine licensing support with supervised client work. Coming in as a client service associate, financial planning associate, or paraplanner at a regional RIA or bank trust department is another common door. Earning your Series 65 or enrolling in a CFP education program before applying gives candidates a measurable edge over those who have not started the credentialing process.
Where can I find and apply to financial advisor jobs in Minnesota?
You can find and apply to financial advisor jobs in Minnesota on Migrate Mate, which lists current Minnesota openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your license level, experience, and preferred location, and apply directly to each listing that fits your background.
