Tips for Your General Maintenance Worker Job Search
List every tool and system you know
General maintenance worker job listings screen for specific equipment. Call out boilers, HVAC units, plumbing fixtures, and power tools by name on your resume. Vague phrases like 'general repairs' get filtered out before a recruiter reads your application.
Add certifications before you apply
An EPA 608 certification for refrigerants or an OSHA 10 card immediately separates you from applicants who only list work history. Many facilities postings list these as requirements, and having them posted on your resume prevents automatic screening rejections.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists general maintenance worker openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings that name your trade strengths
Maintenance roles at hospitals, apartment complexes, and factories all pull from the same job title but prioritize very different skills. Read each posting for its top two or three requirements and mirror that language exactly in your cover message and resume summary.
Prepare a short work-order story for interviews
Interviewers at facilities-heavy employers almost always ask about a time you diagnosed and fixed an unexpected problem. Have one specific example ready that walks through what broke, how you identified the cause, what you did, and how quickly the issue was resolved.
Follow up within three business days
Maintenance departments often promote from within and move quickly when a position opens. A brief, direct follow-up email after submitting your application keeps your name visible and signals the reliability that supervisors say they value above almost everything else.
General Maintenance Worker Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most general maintenance workers?
The companies hiring the most general maintenance workers right now include Walther Farms LLC - MI, American Water, and Aramark, with the largest share of openings in Michigan, Massachusetts, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Property management firms, hospital systems, and large manufacturing plants consistently account for the bulk of openings nationwide.
How many general maintenance worker jobs are remote?
About 0% of general maintenance worker openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, since most of the role requires hands-on work at a physical site. The sub-areas with the most flexibility are maintenance coordination, scheduling, and work-order management, where experienced workers sometimes handle administrative duties from home.
How do you become a general maintenance worker?
Start by building hands-on experience through home repairs, volunteer projects, or a helper role alongside a licensed tradesperson. Earning an OSHA 10 card and an EPA 608 certification for refrigerant handling makes you competitive for facility postings. Many employers accept a combination of vocational coursework and demonstrated repair skills in place of a formal degree.
Can you get hired as a general maintenance worker with little or no experience?
Yes, many employers hire entry-level candidates as maintenance helpers or assistants and train them on the job. Highlighting any hands-on work, including home repairs, school projects, or seasonal groundskeeping, gives hiring managers something concrete to evaluate. Smaller apartment complexes and retail chains are especially likely to take a chance on motivated candidates who show mechanical aptitude and reliability.
What does the general maintenance worker interview process look like?
Most employers run a phone screen followed by one in-person interview with a facilities manager or property supervisor. Expect scenario questions about diagnosing equipment failures and prioritizing multiple repair requests at once. Some larger employers add a brief hands-on skills assessment where you demonstrate basic electrical, plumbing, or HVAC tasks before a conditional offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to general maintenance worker jobs?
You can find and apply to general maintenance worker jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the listings to find roles that match your skills and location, then apply directly to each one that fits.
