Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Building Maintenance Mechanic
Document every trade certification you hold
PERM requires your employer to define minimum qualifications before recruiting. List all journeyman licenses, HVAC certifications, and electrical endorsements on your resume now so employers can write requirements around your actual credentials, not generic ones.
Target facilities-heavy employers with in-house maintenance teams
Universities, hospital systems, large hotel chains, and industrial manufacturers run full-time building maintenance departments and have established PERM filing infrastructure. These employers are far more likely to sponsor than small property management firms.
Search sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Filter by green card sponsorship history for building trades roles on Migrate Mate to surface employers who have filed PERM applications for similar positions. This removes guesswork from your job search entirely.
Check the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating offers
PERM requires your employer to pay the DOL prevailing wage for your specific role and location. Look up the wage level for your SOC code using the OFLC Wage Search before any offer conversation so you know the floor the employer must meet.
Ask employers directly about their PERM filing timeline
PERM recruitment advertising, labor certification, I-140 filing, and adjustment of status can take two to four years combined. Confirm whether a prospective employer has in-house immigration counsel or uses a law firm before accepting an offer.
Understand that EB-3 has no lottery unlike H-1B
Building Maintenance Mechanic roles typically qualify under EB-3 skilled worker, which has no random lottery selection. Your place in line depends on your priority date and country of birth, not an annual cap drawing.

Find Building Maintenance Mechanic JobsBuilding Maintenance Mechanic Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Building Maintenance Mechanic role qualify for green card sponsorship?
Yes. Building Maintenance Mechanic is classified as a skilled worker occupation under the EB-3 category. Employers must complete PERM labor certification with DOL before filing an I-140 petition with USCIS. Roles requiring at least two years of training or a journeyman-level credential are well-suited for the EB-3 skilled worker pathway.
How does EB-3 green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B requires a bachelor's degree in a specialty field and is subject to an annual lottery, which maintenance mechanic roles rarely clear. EB-3 has no lottery and covers skilled trades. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM plus I-140 plus adjustment of status typically takes two to four years, compared to a faster H-1B approval for degree-requiring roles.
What credentials strengthen a Building Maintenance Mechanic PERM application?
DOL's PERM process requires the employer to document that no qualified U.S. workers were available. Your journeyman licenses, HVAC EPA Section 608 certification, electrical endorsements, and multi-trade experience make you harder to replace with a domestic candidate, which supports the employer's recruitment documentation and strengthens the overall labor certification case.
How can I find employers who sponsor green cards for building maintenance roles?
Migrate Mate lets you filter job listings by green card sponsorship history, so you can identify facilities employers who have filed PERM applications for building trades positions before. Targeting employers with an established PERM filing track record in this occupational category cuts your search time significantly and raises the likelihood of a successful sponsorship offer.
Can my employer start my green card process while I am on a different work visa?
Yes. Employers can file a PERM application on your behalf regardless of your current visa status, including H-2B or TN. You can pursue concurrent filing of I-485 adjustment of status once your priority date becomes current, provided you maintain valid status throughout the process. USCIS permits this stacking of petitions where visa availability allows.
