Verify your credential equivalency early
Foreign medical assistant diplomas and certifications vary widely in how USCIS evaluates them during PERM. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-recognized agency before applying so your documents are ready when an employer initiates the labor certification.
Target employers with E-Verify enrollment
Clinics and health systems enrolled in E-Verify have already built compliance infrastructure for foreign workers. This signals that HR teams understand the employer obligations tied to PERM filings and are more likely to follow through on sponsorship.
Search sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Clinical Medical Assistant roles by green card sponsorship history. Targeting employers who have filed PERM for similar roles cuts your search time and puts your application in front of organizations already familiar with the process.
Understand the prevailing wage before negotiating
DOL sets the wage your employer must pay you under PERM, based on your job duties and location. Look up the rate for your specific SOC code and metro area using the OFLC Wage Search so you know what level to expect before you accept any offer.
Clarify PERM job duties match your actual role
PERM filings are tied to a specific job description. If your daily duties drift from what DOL certified, your green card case can be challenged. Confirm during the offer stage that the written job description accurately reflects the clinical tasks you will perform.
Account for EB-3 priority date backlogs by country
EB-3 has no annual numerical cap concerns for most nationalities, but applicants from India and China face priority date backlogs that can extend the wait by years. Check the monthly Visa Bulletin from USCIS to understand your realistic timeline before accepting a sponsorship offer.
Green Card Clinical Medical Assistant: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Clinical Medical Assistant jobs typically qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most Clinical Medical Assistant roles qualify under EB-3, which covers skilled workers requiring at least two years of training or experience. EB-2 is available if the position requires an advanced degree and your employer can demonstrate that. In practice, the majority of PERM filings for this occupation category go through EB-3, so that is the pathway most job seekers should focus on when targeting employers.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B visa requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation, which is difficult to establish for clinical medical assistant positions, and it is subject to an annual lottery cap. PERM-based green card sponsorship through EB-3 has no lottery, no annual cap concerns for most nationalities, and leads directly to permanent residency rather than a temporary status. The tradeoff is timeline: the full PERM, I-140, and adjustment of status process typically takes longer than an initial H-1B approval.
What credentials do I need to strengthen my PERM sponsorship case?
Employers and DOL will evaluate your medical assistant training, any relevant certifications such as CMA or RMA, and your clinical experience. Foreign credentials should be evaluated by a NACES-recognized agency before your employer begins the PERM process. O*NET profiles the knowledge and skill requirements for this occupation, which can guide you in documenting how your background matches the certified job duties.
How do I find Clinical Medical Assistant employers who will sponsor a green card?
The most reliable approach is to search specifically for employers with an active PERM filing history in healthcare. Migrate Mate lets you filter job listings by green card sponsorship history, so you can focus your applications on clinics, hospitals, and health systems that have already navigated the PERM process for similar roles rather than cold-applying and hoping the employer is willing to sponsor.
Can my employer start my green card process while I am working on a temporary visa?
Yes, and starting early is strongly advisable. Your employer can initiate the PERM labor certification while you hold a valid work authorization status. Because the full employment-based green card process involves PERM certification, I-140 petition approval, and then adjustment of status or consular processing, beginning as soon as possible gives you the most runway and reduces the risk of a status gap before your permanent residency is approved.
