Construction Engineer Green Card Jobs
Construction Engineer roles qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process, which requires employers to document a domestic recruitment effort before filing your I-140 petition. Most positions fall under EB-3 as skilled workers, though advanced-degree candidates can pursue EB-2. Sponsorship timelines vary significantly by your country of birth.

Verify your degree meets PERM requirements
PERM labor certifications for Construction Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or construction engineering. A foreign degree evaluation from a NACES-member credential evaluator confirms equivalency to U.S. degree standards before your employer files.
Target employers with active E-Verify enrollment
Construction firms enrolled in E-Verify have already built immigration compliance infrastructure, making PERM sponsorship administratively easier for them. Prioritize contractors working on federal projects, as E-Verify enrollment is mandatory for those employers.
Search for green card sponsoring jobs on Migrate Mate
Filter Construction Engineer roles by employers with green card sponsorship history using Migrate Mate. This cuts out firms that have never filed PERM applications and focuses your search on employers already familiar with the EB-2 and EB-3 process.
Understand the prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your job zone and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up wage levels for Construction Engineer roles in your target metro before entering salary discussions with any sponsor.
Confirm the job description matches your O*NET profile
The PERM labor certification must describe duties consistent with the Construction Engineer O*NET occupation code. If your employer's job description mixes in unrelated duties, PERM audits become more likely and can delay your green card by a year or more.
Ask about concurrent I-140 and I-485 filing eligibility
If your priority date is current when your I-140 is filed, you can file the I-485 adjustment of status concurrently. Confirm this with your employer's attorney early, since concurrent filing lets you work and travel freely while USCIS adjudicates your green card.

Find Construction Engineer JobsConstruction Engineer Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Construction Engineer role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Most Construction Engineer positions qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers requiring a bachelor's degree in engineering. EB-2 applies if the role requires an advanced degree, such as a master's in structural or geotechnical engineering, or if your employer pursues a National Interest Waiver for infrastructure-related work. Your employer's attorney will determine the appropriate category based on the actual job requirements.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for Construction Engineers?
H-1B is a temporary nonimmigrant status with a two- to three-year initial period and annual lottery risk. EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship is a permanent residency pathway with no annual cap at the petition level. The PERM labor certification adds six to twelve months of DOL processing before your I-140 is filed, but the end result is lawful permanent residency, not a visa renewal cycle.
How long does the PERM and green card process take for Construction Engineers?
DOL currently takes six to eighteen months to adjudicate PERM labor certifications, depending on whether an audit is triggered. Once certified, USCIS processes the I-140 petition in eight to twelve months under standard processing. If your country of birth has a backlogged priority date, the final green card step can take significantly longer. Check the USCIS Visa Bulletin for current wait times by country.
Which construction employers typically sponsor green cards for engineers?
Large general contractors, engineering-procurement-construction firms, federal infrastructure contractors, and specialty structural engineering consultancies are the most active EB-3 sponsors for Construction Engineers. Federal contractors are required to use E-Verify, which indicates existing immigration compliance capacity. Use Migrate Mate to identify employers with documented green card sponsorship history in the construction and engineering sectors.
Can I switch Construction Engineer employers after my I-140 is approved?
Yes. Under AC21 portability rules, you can transfer your approved I-140 petition to a new employer in the same or a similar occupational classification once your I-485 has been pending for 180 days. Construction Engineer roles generally fall within the same Standard Occupational Classification group, so portability is straightforward. Notify USCIS of the employer change before your adjustment is adjudicated.
