Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Controls Technician
Document your PLC and SCADA credentials precisely
PERM requires your employer to define a minimum qualification for the role. List every certified platform you've worked on, from Allen-Bradley to Siemens, so the job description written for your PERM matches your actual background without overstating requirements.
Target manufacturers enrolled in E-Verify
E-Verify enrollment signals an employer already handles work-authorization compliance routinely. Automation-heavy plants, food processing facilities, and energy companies with existing foreign national employees are your strongest leads for EB-3 sponsorship.
Search for green card sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Controls Technician openings by employers with active PERM and I-140 filing history, saving you from applying to companies that have no green card sponsorship infrastructure in place.
Verify the prevailing wage tier before accepting an offer
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your SOC code and the employer's county before negotiating. Your offered wage must meet or exceed the certified level or DOL will reject the PERM application outright.
Understand the EB-3 versus EB-2 filing path for your background
EB-3 covers skilled workers with two or more years of training, which fits most Controls Technicians. If you hold a bachelor's or advanced degree in electrical engineering or a related field, ask your employer whether an EB-2 filing makes sense given your priority date.
Plan your timeline around PERM's advertising requirements
PERM requires the employer to run mandatory recruitment steps before filing, which typically takes three to six months before the petition even reaches DOL. Factor this into your current visa status timeline so you don't end up out of status while the process runs.

Find Controls Technician JobsControls Technician Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Controls Technician roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most Controls Technician positions qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers, since the role typically requires at least two years of specialized training with PLCs, HMIs, or industrial control systems. Candidates who hold a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field may qualify under EB-2, which requires an advanced degree or the equivalent. Your employer's immigration attorney will determine the correct category based on the specific job duties and your credentials.
How does the PERM green card process differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B is a temporary nonimmigrant visa with an annual lottery cap and a maximum initial stay of six years. PERM-based green card sponsorship is a permanent immigration pathway with no lottery. The employer files a labor certification with DOL demonstrating no qualified U.S. worker is available, then files an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. For EB-3 applicants from most countries outside India and China, visa numbers are typically current, meaning you won't face multi-year backlogs.
How can I find Controls Technician employers who sponsor green cards?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Controls Technician openings filtered by employers with a documented history of PERM filings and I-140 approvals. Most general job boards don't surface this sponsorship data, so you'd otherwise need to research each employer's immigration history manually through DOL disclosure files. Targeting companies with an existing PERM process cuts months off your search.
What does my employer need to prove during PERM for a Controls Technician role?
Your employer must demonstrate to DOL that no minimally qualified U.S. worker applied for the position after a mandatory recruitment campaign. The job description filed with PERM must match the actual duties of the role and cannot require experience or skills beyond what is normally needed for the position. If the recruitment process turns up a qualified U.S. applicant, PERM will be denied regardless of your qualifications.
Can I switch employers after my I-140 is approved?
Once your I-140 has been approved for 180 days and you have filed an I-485 adjustment of status application, federal portability rules allow you to move to a new employer in the same or a similar occupational classification without losing your priority date. For Controls Technicians, this generally means staying within industrial automation, manufacturing maintenance, or process control roles. USCIS reviews the new position against your approved I-140 to confirm portability applies.
