Document your technical credentials before applying
PERM requires your education and experience to match the job description precisely. Gather transcripts, professional certifications, and reference letters that map directly to the Engineering Technician duties listed in the labor certification.
Verify your role qualifies under EB-2 or EB-3
Engineering Technician positions typically file under EB-3 skilled worker, but roles requiring a bachelor's degree in engineering technology can support EB-2. Check the O*NET occupation profile to confirm the education and training requirements for your specific specialization.
Target employers with active PERM filing history
Manufacturers, defense contractors, utilities, and public infrastructure firms consistently sponsor Engineering Technicians through PERM. Search Migrate Mate to filter companies with green card sponsorship history for this role rather than cold-applying to employers unfamiliar with the process.
Ask employers about prevailing wage compliance early
DOL requires your offered wage to meet the prevailing wage for your job zone and location before PERM is filed. Cross-check the employer's offer against the OFLC Wage Search tool for your occupation and metropolitan area to catch gaps before the filing stage.
Understand the PERM recruitment timeline before accepting an offer
PERM labor certification typically takes six to twelve months before the I-140 can be filed. Confirm your employer has completed or budgeted for the mandatory recruitment steps, including advertising and DOL audit response time, so the timeline aligns with your current status.
Prepare for potential priority date backlogs at I-485
Nationals from India and China face significant wait times in the EB-3 category even after I-140 approval. Workers from other countries currently face shorter backlogs. Check USCIS visa bulletin priority dates for your country of birth before accepting a sponsorship offer.

Find Engineering Technician JobsEngineering Technician Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Engineering Technician jobs qualify for green card sponsorship?
Yes. Engineering Technician roles qualify under EB-3 skilled worker when the position requires at least two years of training or experience. Employers must complete PERM labor certification with the DOL, demonstrating no qualified U.S. workers are available, before filing the I-140 immigrant petition on your behalf. Roles requiring a bachelor's degree in engineering technology may also qualify under EB-2.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for this role?
Unlike the H-1B, EB-3 green card sponsorship has no annual lottery and leads to permanent residency rather than a temporary status. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM plus I-140 plus adjustment of status can take two to four years or more depending on your country of birth. H-1B extensions can bridge that wait if you already hold H-1B status, but the green card path is permanent and not subject to annual cap uncertainty.
Which employers sponsor green cards for Engineering Technicians?
Defense contractors, utility companies, civil engineering firms, semiconductor manufacturers, and public works agencies are among the most consistent sponsors for this role. Employers who regularly hire through federal contracts or operate in regulated industries tend to have established PERM processes. Use Migrate Mate to search companies with verified green card sponsorship history for Engineering Technician positions rather than relying on job postings that rarely disclose sponsorship status upfront.
What happens to my green card case if I change employers mid-process?
If your I-140 has been approved and has been pending for more than 180 days, you may be able to port your priority date to a new employer under AC21 portability rules, as long as the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. Changing employers before I-140 approval generally requires restarting PERM with the new employer. Confirm portability eligibility with your new employer's immigration counsel before resigning.
Can I negotiate salary with a sponsoring employer during the green card process?
Your offered wage must meet or exceed the DOL prevailing wage submitted with the PERM application for your specific job title, experience level, and work location. Employers cannot reduce your salary below that certified wage once PERM is filed. Raises are permitted, but any material change to job duties or work location may require a new PERM filing. Clarify wage floor terms with your employer before the labor certification is submitted.
