Match your credentials to PERM requirements early
PERM requires your degree field to align with the Industrial Hygienist role. A degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health, or a closely related science typically satisfies the DOL's educational nexus requirement. Gather transcripts and credential evaluations before applying.
Target employers with regulated worksite obligations
Manufacturers, construction firms, and healthcare systems operating under OSHA Process Safety Management or NFPA standards routinely sponsor Industrial Hygienists because demand is compliance-driven. These employers are more likely to have existing PERM infrastructure and in-house legal teams.
Search green card sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Industrial Hygienist openings by employers with active EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history. Targeting companies that have completed PERM for this occupation before cuts your search time significantly.
Verify the OFLC prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your offered salary must meet or exceed the DOL prevailing wage for your geographic area and job zone. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check Level II or Level III wages for Industrial Hygienist roles in your target city before accepting any offer.
Clarify EB-2 versus EB-3 eligibility with your employer
If the posted role requires only a bachelor's degree, PERM will route through EB-3. An advanced degree in industrial hygiene or occupational health, or a Certified Industrial Hygienist credential, may support an EB-2 filing. Confirm which category applies before the I-140 is drafted.
Understand that PERM advertising rules affect your start date
USCIS requires employers to complete a mandatory recruitment period, typically 30 to 60 days, before filing the PERM application. Factor this into your timeline when weighing competing offers, especially if you're transitioning from an H-1B or OPT.

Find Industrial Hygienist JobsIndustrial Hygienist Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Industrial Hygienist role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Both categories can apply. EB-3 covers positions requiring a bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, environmental science, or a related field. EB-2 applies when the role requires an advanced degree or the candidate holds one with strong professional credentials. Your employer's immigration counsel determines which category fits the specific job description before filing the PERM application with DOL.
How does EB-3 green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for an Industrial Hygienist?
The H-1B is a temporary work visa subject to an annual lottery cap; the EB-3 leads to permanent residency with no lottery. PERM-based green card processing takes longer overall, typically two to four years for most nationalities, but it results in a green card rather than a visa you must renew. Most applicants from countries other than India and China face shorter EB-3 wait times than H-1B holders managing annual cap uncertainty.
What role does the Certified Industrial Hygienist credential play in the PERM process?
The CIH designation issued by ABIH can strengthen an EB-2 petition by demonstrating advanced professional credentials beyond a bachelor's degree, particularly when the employer's job description includes it as a preferred or required qualification. If your employer lists CIH as a requirement in the PERM job posting, USCIS will expect you to hold it, so verify the job description accurately reflects the actual minimum requirements before filing.
Where can I find Industrial Hygienist jobs where the employer already sponsors green cards?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Industrial Hygienist openings filtered by employers with documented EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history. Focusing on companies that have completed PERM labor certifications for this occupation before significantly reduces the risk of encountering employers unfamiliar with the process or unwilling to bear the legal cost.
What happens to my green card case if I change employers during the PERM process?
If you switch employers before your I-140 is approved, you generally need to restart the PERM process with the new employer. Once your I-140 is approved and your priority date is more than 180 days old, USCIS portability rules under AC21 may allow you to transfer to a same or similar Industrial Hygienist role with a new employer without losing your priority date.
