Document your CAD software certifications early
PERM requires your employer to prove your qualifications match the job. Gather official certificates for AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, or CATIA before starting the process, gaps in credential documentation are a common source of PERM delays.
Target industries with recurring PERM filings
Engineering consultancies, aerospace manufacturers, and large architecture firms file PERM applications regularly for CAD Technicians. Prioritize employers whose job postings mention long-term employment or who list green card sponsorship explicitly in the role description.
Verify your role meets specialty occupation standards
Not all CAD Technician positions qualify at the EB-2 level. Check the O*NET occupation profile for CAD Drafters to confirm the degree requirements and skill descriptors your employer will need to document for a defensible PERM filing.
Search green card sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by CAD or drafting roles with confirmed PERM sponsorship history. Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have filed green card cases for similar positions, saving you from applying to companies with no sponsorship track record.
Understand the prevailing wage before your offer stage
Your employer must pay at least the DOL-certified prevailing wage for your location and role level. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage for CAD Drafters or Engineering Technicians in your target city before salary negotiations begin.
Clarify sponsorship scope during the offer conversation
Ask directly whether the employer will cover both the PERM and I-140 stages, not just one. Some employers fund PERM but pause sponsorship before filing the I-140, which restarts your green card timeline if you change jobs.
Green Card CAD Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a CAD Technician role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most CAD Technician positions qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers, since the role typically requires two or more years of training. EB-2 sponsorship is available if your employer can document that the position requires an advanced degree or if you hold one and can demonstrate substantially equivalent qualifications. The PERM filing determines which category applies based on the actual job requirements your employer certifies to DOL.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for CAD Technicians?
Green card sponsorship through PERM leads to permanent residency rather than a temporary work authorization. Unlike the H-1B visa, which has an annual lottery cap and a six-year base limit, the EB-3 category has no lottery. Processing is longer, often two to four years from PERM filing to green card approval for most countries, but the outcome is permanent status rather than a renewable temporary visa with cap exposure.
What does the PERM labor certification process involve for a CAD Technician job?
Your employer files a PERM application with DOL certifying that no qualified U.S. worker was available for the role at the prevailing wage. They must run a formal recruitment process first, including job postings and documented outreach. Once PERM is certified, your employer files an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS on your behalf. You then apply for adjustment of status or an immigrant visa once your priority date becomes current.
How can I find CAD Technician employers who actively sponsor green cards?
Migrate Mate lets you search for CAD and drafting roles filtered by confirmed PERM sponsorship history, so you can focus applications on employers who have completed the process for similar positions before. Engineering and architecture firms, automotive manufacturers, and infrastructure contractors are the most active PERM filers for CAD roles, but sponsorship willingness varies significantly even within those sectors.
Can I change jobs after my employer files my green card application?
You can change employers after your I-140 has been approved and your priority date has been pending for 180 days or more, under AC21 portability rules. The new role must be in the same or a similar occupational classification, which for CAD Technicians generally means staying in drafting, design support, or related technical roles. Changing jobs before those conditions are met typically requires restarting the PERM process with the new employer.
