Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Drafting Technician
Document your CAD certifications before applying
PERM requires your employer to verify your qualifications match the job requirements exactly. Gather official transcripts, Autodesk or AutoCAD certification records, and any drafting coursework documentation before the process begins to avoid delays.
Target firms with active PERM filing history
Engineering consultancies, architecture firms, and construction companies that have sponsored foreign drafting staff before move faster through PERM. Search OFLC disclosure data by job title to confirm a firm has filed for similar Drafting Technician roles.
Understand how EB-3 differs from H-1B for this role
EB-3 sponsorship leads to permanent residency with no annual lottery, unlike H-1B. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM labor certification adds months before your I-140 petition, but the outcome is a green card rather than a temporary work authorization.
Use Migrate Mate to filter sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to find Drafting Technician openings at employers with green card sponsorship history. Filtering by EB-3 and PERM filings surfaces firms already familiar with the labor certification process for technical and design roles.
Clarify specialty occupation status early in the offer stage
Drafting Technician roles can fall under EB-3 skilled worker or EB-2 advanced-degree tracks depending on how the employer defines the position. Ask HR whether the job description requires a degree or relies on equivalent experience, since PERM documentation must match the offer letter precisely.
Confirm your employer will cover PERM advertising requirements
DOL mandates that employers complete a supervised recruitment process before certifying a PERM application. Confirm your employer understands they must post job ads, document applicant review, and retain those records for five years after certification.

Find Drafting Technician JobsDrafting Technician Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Drafting Technician roles typically qualify for EB-3 or EB-2 green card sponsorship?
Most Drafting Technician positions qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers, since the role typically requires vocational training or an associate degree rather than a full bachelor's degree. If the position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or a related field, the employer may pursue EB-2 instead. The job description in the PERM filing determines which category applies.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B sponsorship is temporary and subject to an annual lottery, while EB-3 green card sponsorship leads to permanent residency with no lottery involved. The PERM labor certification process adds time upfront, typically several months before the I-140 petition stage, but you're working toward a permanent status rather than renewing a temporary visa every few years.
What documents should I prepare before a U.S. employer starts my PERM application?
Pull together official transcripts, drafting or CAD certifications from recognized programs, and any professional licensing records. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization helps the employer document equivalency. USCIS and the DOL both require that your qualifications match the job requirements listed in the PERM filing exactly.
Where can I find Drafting Technician jobs where the employer is open to green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for foreign professionals seeking employment-based green card sponsorship. You can search Drafting Technician roles filtered by employers with PERM and EB-3 filing history, so you're targeting firms that have already navigated the labor certification process rather than starting from scratch with an employer unfamiliar with it.
How long does the EB-3 green card process typically take for a Drafting Technician?
The full process generally takes two to four years for applicants from most countries, covering PERM labor certification, I-140 approval, and the final adjustment of status or consular processing stage. Applicants from India or China may face longer waits due to priority date backlogs. USCIS publishes monthly Visa Bulletins showing current priority dates by country and category.
