Match your degree to the role description
PERM requires your foreign degree to align with the specialty occupation defined in the job posting. An education or counseling degree strengthens your case; a mismatched field forces employers to document equivalency, slowing the filing process considerably.
Get your credentials evaluated before applying
U.S. employers sponsoring green cards need proof your foreign degree equals a U.S. bachelor's or master's. Order a course-by-course credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization before you reach the offer stage so you're not scrambling during PERM.
Target employers who file PERM regularly
Large school districts, higher-education institutions, and education management companies file PERM labor certifications far more consistently than small tutoring firms. Search OFLC disclosure data to confirm an employer has sponsored roles like yours before reaching out.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Filtering for Education Consultant openings at green-card-sponsoring organizations saves weeks of manual research. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with active PERM and I-140 filing history in education, so your applications go to companies already set up to sponsor.
Clarify EB-2 versus EB-3 eligibility with your employer
If the role requires only a bachelor's degree, most employers file under EB-3. A master's requirement or NIW-eligible research focus can qualify you under EB-2. Confirm which category your employer intends to use before DOL starts the prevailing-wage determination.
Ask about the PERM timeline during offer negotiations
PERM labor certification currently runs six months or longer at DOL before your employer can file the I-140. Build that window into your status planning, especially if you're on OPT or an H-1B visa that needs concurrent filing to protect your work authorization.
Green Card Education Consultant: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Education Consultant role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Most Education Consultant positions qualify under EB-3 when the employer requires a bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or a related field. EB-2 applies if the role requires a master's degree or the employer can document that the position normally requires an advanced degree. Your employer's job description and the prevailing-wage determination at DOL drive that classification.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for Education Consultant roles?
H-1B is a temporary nonimmigrant status capped at 85,000 visas per year and subject to an annual lottery. Green card sponsorship through PERM and I-140 is permanent and has no annual cap at the EB-3 level for most countries, meaning no lottery risk. The tradeoff is time: the PERM process alone adds six or more months before USCIS even reviews your I-140 petition.
What does the PERM process require from my employer for this role?
Your employer must conduct a supervised recruitment campaign proving no qualified U.S. worker is available for the Education Consultant position, then submit those results to DOL for labor certification. The job requirements posted during recruitment must match what DOL certifies exactly. Any change to the duties or minimum qualifications after certification can void the filing.
How can I find Education Consultant jobs that offer green card sponsorship?
Start with Migrate Mate, which filters job listings by employers with documented PERM and I-140 filing history in education and related fields. Generic job boards don't surface sponsorship history, so you waste time applying to employers who have never filed for a foreign worker. Targeting companies with a track record of green card filings in education cuts your search time significantly.
Can I use O*NET to confirm my role qualifies as a specialty occupation?
Yes. The O*NET occupation profile for Education Consultants lists the typical education level, core tasks, and knowledge requirements that DOL and USCIS use when evaluating whether a position qualifies for employment-based sponsorship. If your job duties align with the O*NET profile for a role requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field, you have a strong foundation for the PERM filing.
