Align your credentials to EB-2 requirements
A master's degree in education, curriculum design, or a subject-matter field positions you for EB-2. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation completed before applying so employers can confirm PERM eligibility quickly.
Target employers with existing PERM infrastructure
Online education companies, K-12 virtual schools, and university extension programs that already sponsor foreign teachers have PERM-experienced HR teams. Employers filing for the first time face longer timelines, so prioritize organizations with established sponsorship workflows.
Verify the prevailing wage before accepting an offer
DOL sets the prevailing wage for Online Teacher roles by geographic work location, even for remote positions. Use the OFLC Wage Search to confirm your offered salary meets the DOL wage level your employer will certify on the PERM application.
Search sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Filter your job search to employers with green card sponsorship history using Migrate Mate. This surfaces Online Teacher roles at organizations that have already navigated PERM for similar positions, reducing your risk of a sponsorship promise that stalls at the labor certification stage.
Understand how remote work affects your PERM filing location
PERM labor market tests are tied to the work location, not the employer's headquarters. If you'll teach remotely from a specific state, your employer must run recruitment in that market. Clarify your work location with your employer before the PERM process begins.
Track your priority date once I-140 is approved
After PERM and I-140 approval, your priority date determines when you can file for adjustment of status. For EB-3 applicants from high-demand countries, backlogs can add years to your timeline. Check the USCIS Visa Bulletin monthly to monitor your place in the queue.
Green Card Online Teacher: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Online Teacher roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Online Teacher positions can qualify under either category depending on the role's stated requirements. EB-2 applies when the job requires a master's degree or equivalent in education or a subject-matter field. EB-3 covers positions requiring a bachelor's degree. Your employer's PERM application must match the degree requirement they list in the job description, so the stated minimum matters more than your actual credentials.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for Online Teachers?
The green card process leads to permanent residency, not a temporary status that expires. Unlike H-1B visa, there's no annual lottery for EB-3 sponsorship, and the process isn't capped in a way that prevents filing. The main trade-off is timeline: PERM labor certification, I-140 approval, and adjustment of status typically take two to four years for most nationalities, significantly longer than an H-1B approval.
What does the PERM labor certification process require from an Online Teacher employer?
Your employer must conduct a DOL-supervised recruitment campaign to demonstrate no qualified U.S. worker is available for the role. For teaching positions, this includes posting the role publicly, documenting all applicants, and providing a lawful business reason for rejecting U.S. candidates. The recruitment window and documentation requirements are strict, and any procedural error can require restarting the process.
How can I find Online Teacher jobs that include green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you filter job listings specifically by green card sponsorship history, so you can identify Online Teacher roles at employers who have successfully filed PERM applications before. This saves time compared to applying broadly and asking about sponsorship at the offer stage, when negotiating it becomes much harder.
Can I change employers after my green card process has started?
Once your I-140 petition has been approved and your priority date is current or nearly current, portability rules under AC21 may allow you to move to a similar teaching role with a new employer without restarting from scratch. If you change jobs during active PERM or before I-140 approval, the process generally must begin again with the new employer.
