IT Programmer Green Card Jobs
IT Programmer roles qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process, which requires your employer to document that no qualified U.S. worker is available for the position. Sponsorship leads to permanent residency, not a temporary visa, making it a long-term commitment from both sides.

Verify your degree aligns with PERM requirements
PERM filings for IT Programmer roles typically require a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field. A degree in an unrelated discipline weakens the employer's labor certification, even if you have years of hands-on coding experience.
Target employers with active PERM filing histories
Use the OFLC Wage Search to identify companies that have recently certified PERM applications for IT Programmer or software developer job titles. Employers who have completed the process before move faster and make fewer filing errors.
Ask about EB-2 versus EB-3 classification before accepting
If your role requires only a bachelor's degree, most employers default to EB-3. Candidates with advanced-degree credentials or specialized professional standing may qualify for EB-2, which can mean a shorter wait if your priority date is backlogged for your country.
Search green-card-sponsoring IT roles through Migrate Mate
Filter IT Programmer positions by employers with documented green card sponsorship activity. Migrate Mate surfaces roles where PERM and I-140 sponsorship are part of the offer, so you're not discovering the employer's position after interviews.
Track your priority date against the Visa Bulletin
Once your employer files the I-140, your priority date is set. For IT Programmer candidates from India or China, that date determines when you can file for adjustment of status, sometimes years later. Check the monthly Visa Bulletin to monitor your place in line.

Find IT Programmer JobsIT Programmer Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Programmer job qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
IT Programmer roles can qualify for either category depending on how the employer defines the position. EB-3 applies when the job requires a bachelor's degree and the candidate meets that threshold. EB-2 applies when the role genuinely requires an advanced degree or the candidate holds one and the employer can document that requirement in the PERM filing.
How is green card sponsorship different from H-1B sponsorship for IT Programmers?
H-1B sponsorship is temporary, capped at 85,000 new approvals annually, and subject to a lottery. Green card sponsorship through PERM and I-140 is permanent, has no annual cap at the EB-3 level for most countries outside India and China, and results in lawful permanent residency. The tradeoff is timeline: the PERM labor market test alone typically takes six to twelve months before the I-140 is even filed.
What does the PERM process actually require from an IT Programmer candidate?
The employer handles most of the PERM filing, but your credentials directly affect approval. DOL requires the employer to prove no qualified U.S. worker is available for the specific role. Your degree field, years of experience, and whether your background matches the job description as written all factor into whether the certification clears the audit stage without a request for additional evidence.
How can I find IT Programmer jobs that include green card sponsorship?
Most job postings don't specify PERM sponsorship upfront, which makes searching inefficient. Migrate Mate filters IT Programmer roles by employers with documented green card sponsorship activity, so you can identify positions where sponsorship is already part of the hiring plan before you apply or interview.
Can an IT Programmer self-petition for a green card without an employer?
Self-petition is possible through the EB-2 National Interest Waiver, which waives the PERM labor certification requirement. To qualify, you'd need to show your work in programming or software development has substantial merit and national importance, and that waiving the employer requirement serves U.S. interests. This path is more demanding to document than standard employer-sponsored PERM and works best for candidates with a strong publication, research, or open-source contribution record.
