Translate your credentials into PERM requirements
PERM approval depends on whether your degree and experience match the job's stated minimum requirements. Get your foreign IT credentials evaluated by a NACES-recognized service so your transcript maps cleanly to a U.S. bachelor's equivalent before the labor certification is filed.
Target employers with active PERM filing history
Not every IT employer files PERM regularly. Search DOL's OFLC disclosure data to identify companies that have sponsored IT Team Lead or senior IT roles within the past two years. Recent filings signal an established internal process, which shortens your path to a green card offer.
Clarify the EB-2 versus EB-3 route early
If your IT Team Lead role requires a master's degree or you can document progressive responsibility in lieu of an advanced degree, EB-2 may be available. Ask the employer's immigration counsel which category they intend to file under before you accept an offer.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring IT employers
Search IT Team Lead roles on Migrate Mate to filter directly for employers offering green card sponsorship. The platform surfaces companies with documented PERM and I-140 filing activity, saving you from applying to roles where sponsorship is unlikely or undefined.
Understand the PERM recruitment window timing
PERM requires the employer to complete DOL-mandated recruitment before filing. That process typically runs 60 to 90 days. Once you have an offer, ask HR when they plan to start the recruitment period so you can set realistic expectations about when your I-140 petition will follow.
Check your O*NET profile before salary negotiations
DOL sets the prevailing wage for your PERM filing based on your job duties and location. Review the O*NET occupation profile for IT Team Lead and use the OFLC Wage Search to see the wage level your employer must certify. A job description that overstates duties can trigger a higher wage tier, which some employers won't meet.

Find IT Team Lead JobsIT Team Lead Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Team Lead role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
IT Team Lead positions typically qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers when they require a bachelor's degree in computer science, IT, or a related field. EB-2 is available if the employer requires a master's degree or if you can document a bachelor's plus five years of progressive experience that substantively exceeds the entry-level standard. Your employer's immigration counsel decides which category to file under based on the actual job requirements.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for an IT Team Lead?
H-1B is a temporary nonimmigrant status with a three-year initial period and annual lottery exposure. Green card sponsorship through PERM and I-140 leads to lawful permanent residency with no renewal requirement and no cap concerns at the EB-3 level for most countries outside India and China. The PERM process adds time upfront, typically six to eighteen months from labor certification to I-140 approval, but the result is permanent status rather than a visa tied to a single employer.
How long does the full PERM to green card process take for an IT Team Lead?
The PERM labor certification stage currently averages six to twelve months at DOL, depending on whether the case is selected for audit. After PERM approval, USCIS adjudicates the I-140 petition, which takes six to eight months under standard processing or around fifteen business days with premium processing. If your priority date is current, you can then file for adjustment of status. Nationals of most countries outside India and China can complete the entire process in two to four years.
What should I look for in a job posting to identify real green card sponsorship?
Look for explicit language stating the employer will sponsor PERM labor certification and I-140, not just H-1B transfer or OPT eligibility. Postings that mention EB-2 or EB-3 categories specifically are strongest. Use Migrate Mate to filter IT Team Lead roles by employers with verified PERM and I-140 filing activity, which removes ambiguity about whether sponsorship is genuinely on the table before you invest time applying.
Can an IT Team Lead be sponsored if they lack a four-year U.S. degree?
Yes. PERM regulations allow three years of relevant work experience to substitute for one year of formal education under the three-for-one rule. An IT Team Lead without a bachelor's degree would need twelve years of documented progressive IT experience to qualify under EB-3. Foreign three-year bachelor's degrees are generally acceptable if a credential evaluation confirms U.S. equivalency. USCIS will review the evaluation as part of the I-140 adjudication.
