Green Card Legal Intern Jobs
Legal Intern roles at U.S. law firms and corporate legal departments can qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM labor certification when the position requires a law degree or paralegal credentials. Sponsorship typically follows a permanent hire offer, so targeting employers with established immigration practices strengthens your path to lawful permanent residency.

Verify your degree meets PERM requirements
PERM labor certification requires your foreign law degree to align with the role's minimum requirements. A credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency confirms equivalency to a U.S. J.D. or paralegal certificate before your employer files.
Target law firms with prior PERM filings
Large and mid-size law firms that routinely sponsor associates are more likely to extend EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship to legal interns they intend to convert to full-time hires. Search DOL PERM disclosure data by industry to filter qualifying employers.
Search roles using Migrate Mate by occupation
Filter Legal Intern and paralegal postings by green card sponsorship history on Migrate Mate. Employers who have completed PERM filings in legal occupations signal an established sponsorship workflow, reducing the risk of a drawn-out or abandoned petition.
Negotiate sponsorship timing before accepting an offer
PERM filings cannot begin until you hold a permanent job offer. Confirm in writing whether your employer will initiate the I-140 petition after a defined performance period, typically six to twelve months post-hire, so your green card timeline starts promptly.
Understand how bar admission affects your petition category
Roles requiring active bar admission in any U.S. state typically qualify under EB-2 as advanced-degree professionals. Paralegal or law clerk positions without bar requirements generally fall under EB-3 skilled worker, which affects processing timelines for certain nationalities.
Check the prevailing wage before your employer files the LCA
DOL requires your offered wage to meet or exceed the prevailing wage for your occupation and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to confirm the wage level your employer will certify before the Labor Condition Application is submitted.
Green Card Legal Intern: Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Legal Intern role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Yes, depending on the position's requirements. If the role requires a J.D. or advanced legal degree, it can qualify under EB-2 for advanced-degree professionals. Roles requiring a bachelor's degree or paralegal training without bar admission typically qualify under EB-3. Your employer's PERM filing specifies the minimum education requirement, which determines the category.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for Legal Intern positions?
Green card sponsorship through PERM leads to lawful permanent residency, not a temporary status. Unlike H-1B visa, there is no annual lottery at the EB-3 level for most nationalities, and the employer files the petition at any time of year. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM labor certification alone can take six to twelve months before the I-140 petition is filed.
Where can I find Legal Intern jobs that offer green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search Legal Intern and related legal occupation postings filtered by employers with documented PERM filing history. That history indicates the firm has completed sponsorship for similar roles before, which is a stronger signal than a job description that merely states sponsorship is available.
What documents should I prepare before approaching an employer about sponsorship?
You'll need a credential evaluation of your foreign law degree from a NACES-approved agency, certified translations of transcripts, and documentation of any bar admissions or paralegal certifications. Employers initiating PERM also require proof that you meet the minimum qualifications stated in the job description at the time they file with DOL.
Can my employer start the PERM process while I'm still in an intern role?
PERM requires a permanent, full-time job offer, so most employers wait until they extend a permanent hire offer before filing. Some firms begin the prevailing wage determination and recruitment steps during your internship to shorten the gap. Confirm with your employer's immigration counsel whether concurrent filing is part of their standard sponsorship process.
