Green Card Mechanical Engineer Jobs
Mechanical Engineer roles qualify for employment-based green card sponsorship under EB-2 or EB-3, depending on your degree level and the position requirements. Many U.S. manufacturers, aerospace firms, and engineering consultancies file PERM labor certifications for mechanical engineers, making this one of the more sponsorship-active technical disciplines.

Document your specialty occupation credentials early
Gather transcripts, professional engineering licenses, and any specialized certifications before applying. PERM requires your employer to prove the role demands at least a bachelor's degree in a specific engineering discipline, and your credentials must align with that requirement.
Target industries with consistent PERM filing histories
Aerospace, automotive, defense contracting, and industrial manufacturing companies file PERM petitions for mechanical engineers far more routinely than general staffing firms or small manufacturers. Prioritize employers in these sectors when you're actively applying.
Search green card sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters mechanical engineer job listings by employers with active green card sponsorship histories, so you can focus your applications on companies already familiar with the PERM and I-140 process rather than starting that conversation from scratch.
Verify the job description matches your actual duties
DOL scrutinizes whether the PERM job description reflects duties actually performed. Before your employer submits, confirm the listed responsibilities, required degree field, and experience requirements accurately reflect the role you'll fill, not a generic posting.
Understand EB-2 versus EB-3 before accepting an offer
If the role requires only a bachelor's degree, your employer will likely file under EB-3. Roles requiring a master's or equivalent may qualify for EB-2, which can affect your priority date and wait time depending on your country of birth.
Use the OFLC Wage Search to assess prevailing wage tiers
PERM requires your offered salary to meet the DOL prevailing wage for your specific occupation and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check which wage level applies before your offer is finalized, since a mismatch can delay or invalidate the PERM filing.
Green Card Mechanical Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Do mechanical engineer roles commonly qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Both categories apply, depending on how the position is defined. EB-3 covers mechanical engineers where a bachelor's degree is the standard requirement, which describes most industry roles. EB-2 applies when the position genuinely requires an advanced degree or when the candidate pursues a National Interest Waiver. Your employer's attorney will determine the appropriate category based on the job requirements and your credentials.
How does the PERM green card process differ from H-1B sponsorship for mechanical engineers?
H-1B visa is a temporary work visa with a three-year initial period and annual lottery exposure for cap-subject petitions. PERM initiates the path to lawful permanent residency, with no annual cap at the EB-3 category level for most countries outside India and China. The PERM process also involves a mandatory DOL supervised recruitment phase before the employer can file, which typically adds six to twelve months to the overall timeline compared to H-1B.
How long does it take to get a green card as a sponsored mechanical engineer?
For applicants born outside India and China, the EB-3 path from PERM filing to green card approval commonly takes two to four years when accounting for DOL processing, I-140 approval, and adjustment of status or consular processing. For Indian and Chinese nationals, priority date backlogs in the EB-2 and EB-3 categories can extend this timeline significantly. USCIS publishes a monthly Visa Bulletin with current priority dates.
Where can I find mechanical engineer jobs with green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter mechanical engineer listings by employers with documented green card sponsorship histories, which removes the guesswork of identifying companies willing to initiate the PERM process. Focusing on employers with prior PERM filings in engineering roles saves time and increases your chances of a successful sponsorship conversation.
Can my employer start PERM sponsorship while I'm working on an H-1B visa?
Yes, and starting early is strategically important. Employers can file a PERM labor certification while you're on H-1B status, and having an approved I-140 before your sixth H-1B year allows you to extend your H-1B beyond the standard six-year cap under AC21 portability rules. Many mechanical engineers in long-term roles begin the PERM process during their third or fourth H-1B year to preserve status continuity.
