Physiatrist Green Card Jobs
Physiatrist roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM labor certification, which requires employers to document recruiting efforts before filing an I-140 petition. Rehabilitation medicine's persistent workforce shortages make physiatrists strong PERM candidates, and many hospital systems and rehabilitation networks actively sponsor foreign-trained physicians for permanent residency.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship in Physiatrist
Verify your medical credentials align with PERM requirements
PERM requires your employer to define the minimum job requirements before filing. Confirm your foreign medical degree and residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation are documented in a format U.S. credentialing bodies and ECFMG will accept.
Target rehabilitation hospital networks over private clinics
Large rehabilitation hospital systems and academic medical centers file PERM petitions far more regularly than solo or small group practices, which often lack in-house immigration counsel to manage the multi-year sponsorship process.
Use Migrate Mate to filter physiatrist roles by sponsorship history
Search Migrate Mate to surface employers with active EB-2 and EB-3 filing history for physiatrist positions, so you focus your applications on organizations that have already committed to green card sponsorship rather than hoping a new employer will.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier before accepting an offer
Your employer's PERM application must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your location and role. Run the OFLC Wage Search using the physical medicine and rehabilitation SOC code before negotiating, so your offer meets DOL certification requirements.
Understand how EB-2 and EB-3 backlogs affect your country of birth
Physicians born in India or China face priority date backlogs under both EB-2 and EB-3 that can stretch years beyond the initial PERM approval. Factor current Visa Bulletin dates into your timeline planning alongside your residency or fellowship completion date.
Get your employer to begin PERM recruitment documentation early
DOL requires employers to complete specific recruitment steps, including job postings and internal notices, before filing. Push your employer to start this process at least six months before your intended I-140 filing date to avoid delays from incomplete recruitment records.

Find Physiatrist JobsPhysiatrist Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do physiatrist roles typically qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Physiatrist positions qualify under both categories. EB-2 applies when the role requires an advanced degree, which a completed medical residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation satisfies. EB-3 covers the same roles when the employer frames requirements at the professional level. Most hospitals file under EB-2 given the specialty training required, but EB-3 can be strategically useful for candidates from backlogged birth countries seeking a faster path to an approved priority date.
How does green card sponsorship through PERM differ from H-1B sponsorship for physicians?
PERM targets permanent residency rather than temporary status, so there is no annual lottery, no six-year time limit, and no cap-related uncertainty at the EB-3 level for most countries. The tradeoff is a longer process: PERM labor certification alone can take twelve months or more before USCIS even receives the I-140 petition. H-1B is faster to obtain but requires renewal every three years and depends on lottery selection for most candidates.
What makes a physiatrist a strong candidate for PERM labor certification approval?
DOL certifies PERM applications when the employer demonstrates no qualified U.S. worker is available for the role. Physical medicine and rehabilitation has documented workforce shortages, particularly in inpatient rehabilitation facilities and rural hospital systems, which strengthens the employer's recruitment documentation. Your board certification status, fellowship training, and any subspecialty focus in areas like spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury rehabilitation also support a well-documented petition.
How can I find physiatrist employers who actively sponsor green cards?
Migrate Mate lets you search physiatrist and physical medicine and rehabilitation roles filtered by employers with confirmed EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history, so you aren't guessing about a potential employer's willingness to file. Focusing your outreach on organizations with an established sponsorship track record significantly reduces the risk of accepting a position only to discover the employer won't initiate PERM.
Can a J-1 waiver physiatrist pursue PERM green card sponsorship simultaneously?
Yes, but the sequencing matters. J-1 waiver obligations typically require you to work in a designated underserved area for a set period, often three years. PERM can be filed during that service period as long as your employer initiates the labor certification and the job location is consistent with your waiver terms. Completing your waiver obligation while your PERM is pending is a common path for foreign-trained physiatrists entering underserved rehabilitation markets.
