Document your relay testing credentials early
Gather certifications like NETA or IEEE membership, calibration records, and protective relay testing logs before applying. PERM requires your employer to define minimum job requirements, and your credentials must match exactly what they advertise.
Target utilities with active PERM filing histories
Investor-owned utilities, rural electric cooperatives, and independent power producers regularly sponsor relay technicians through PERM. Search OFLC disclosure data to confirm which employers have filed EB-3 certifications for electrical protection or substation roles recently.
Ask employers about prevailing wage before accepting offers
PERM requires your employer to pay the DOL prevailing wage for your location and job duties. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the Level I through Level IV wage tiers for relay or electrical protection technician roles in your target metro area.
Find green-card-sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Search Migrate Mate to identify Relay Technician employers with active EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship histories. Filtering by role and sponsorship type saves time compared to manually reviewing OFLC disclosure files for each potential employer.
Understand how USCIS priority dates affect your timeline
Once your I-140 petition is approved, your place in the green card queue is set by your priority date. For most countries outside India and China, EB-3 relay technician cases move to adjustment of status within a manageable timeframe under current USCIS visa bulletin cutoffs.

Find Relay Technician JobsRelay Technician Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Relay Technician role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most Relay Technician positions qualify under EB-3 as skilled worker roles requiring at least two years of specialized training or experience in protective relay systems, substation protection, or power grid testing. EB-2 sponsorship is possible if the role requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field and the employer can justify that requirement in the PERM application.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for a Relay Technician?
Green card sponsorship through PERM leads to permanent residency, not a temporary status. Unlike the H-1B, EB-3 has no annual lottery, so your employer's petition is processed on its own merits without a random selection event. The tradeoff is a longer overall timeline: PERM labor certification, I-140 approval, and adjustment of status typically span two to four years for most nationalities, compared to an H-1B that can be active within months.
What does the PERM process look like for a Relay Technician employer?
Your employer files a PERM application with the DOL, documenting that no qualified U.S. workers are available for the role at the prevailing wage. The recruitment process must follow strict DOL advertising requirements. Once certified, your employer files an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS on your behalf. Only after I-140 approval and a current priority date can you file for adjustment of status or apply for an immigrant visa abroad.
How can I find Relay Technician jobs that offer green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Relay Technician roles at employers with EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship histories, filtered by location and job category. This is more efficient than reviewing raw OFLC disclosure files manually. Targeting employers who have completed PERM certifications for similar roles in the past significantly increases your chances of finding a willing sponsor.
Can my Relay Technician green card case proceed while I'm on a work visa?
Yes. Many sponsored relay technicians begin the PERM and I-140 process while working on H-1B, TN, or other employment-authorized statuses. Once your I-140 is approved and your priority date becomes current, you file Form I-485 to adjust status without leaving the country. USCIS permits concurrent filing of I-140 and I-485 when a visa number is immediately available, which can shorten the final waiting period.
