Match your credentials to the PERM job requirements
PERM locks your qualifications to the job description filed with DOL. If your degree is in a field like electrical engineering rather than IT, gather documentation showing coursework or certifications that bridge the gap before your employer files.
Target employers with dedicated immigration support teams
IT support roles at mid-size technology firms and managed service providers are more likely to have in-house HR processes for PERM sponsorship than small businesses, which often lack the infrastructure to navigate labor certification requirements.
Search for sponsoring employers using Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate lets you filter IT Technical Support positions by employers with active green card sponsorship history, so you're applying to roles where PERM sponsorship is already part of the hiring process rather than a negotiation.
Understand how prevailing wage affects your offer
DOL requires your offered wage to meet or exceed the prevailing wage for your role and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage tiers for IT Technical Support before evaluating any offer tied to sponsorship.
Clarify sponsorship intent before accepting an offer
Ask the employer directly whether they will file PERM for your role and confirm the timeline. PERM requires posting, recruitment, and DOL processing that can take well over a year before an I-140 petition is even filed.
Check your occupation profile under O*NET before filing
Your employer's attorney will reference O*NET to define your job duties and minimum requirements in the PERM application. Reviewing the IT Technical Support profile in advance helps you flag discrepancies between the official definition and your actual role.
Green Card IT Technical Support: Frequently Asked Questions
Does IT Technical Support qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most IT Technical Support roles qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers or professionals, since the position typically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. EB-2 applies when the role requires an advanced degree or the employer can demonstrate the position demands graduate-level expertise. Your employer's immigration attorney will determine the correct category based on the actual job requirements.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for IT Technical Support professionals?
H-1B visa is a temporary status with a three-year initial period and an annual lottery cap that creates real uncertainty each cycle. PERM sponsorship leads to permanent residency and has no annual cap at the EB-3 level, though priority date backlogs affect nationals from high-demand countries. The PERM process involves DOL labor certification, which can take one to two years before USCIS even receives the I-140 petition, so the path is longer but the outcome is permanent.
What is the PERM labor certification process for IT Technical Support roles?
PERM requires your employer to conduct a supervised recruitment campaign to demonstrate no qualified U.S. workers are available for the role. DOL reviews the application and, if approved, issues a certification that allows your employer to file an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. The entire PERM stage, from recruitment through DOL approval, typically runs six months to over a year before the I-140 stage begins.
How do I find IT Technical Support employers that sponsor green cards?
Migrate Mate filters IT Technical Support job listings by employers with documented green card sponsorship history, so you can focus applications on companies already familiar with the PERM process. This saves time compared to applying broadly and discovering late in the process that an employer won't sponsor permanent residency.
Can I change employers after my I-140 is approved for an IT Technical Support role?
Once your I-140 has been approved for at least 180 days and your adjustment of status application has been pending for at least 180 days, you may port to a new employer in the same or a similar occupational classification under AC21 portability rules. IT Technical Support roles generally share SOC codes with related IT support and helpdesk positions, but you should confirm with an immigration attorney that the new role qualifies as same or similar before making a move.
