Green Card Research Scientist Jobs
Research Scientist roles qualify for EB-2 sponsorship when the position requires a master's or doctoral degree in a specialized field, and for EB-3 when a bachelor's degree applies. Employers must complete PERM labor certification before filing your I-140 petition, making early sponsorship conversations essential.

Document your research contributions before applying
Gather publications, patents, conference presentations, and grant awards now. PERM requires your employer to define minimum qualifications, and your credentials must exactly match the posted requirements, so a documented record prevents mismatches that delay or invalidate certification.
Target employers with dedicated immigration infrastructure
Universities, national laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, and large tech firms run ongoing PERM cycles and have HR staff familiar with research roles. A first-time sponsor may underestimate the recruitment documentation PERM demands, creating procedural denials that restart your timeline.
Search green-card-sponsoring research employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Research Scientist roles by employers with active EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history. This surfaces labs and companies already running PERM cycles, so you're not cold-approaching employers unfamiliar with the process.
Clarify whether your role qualifies under EB-2 or EB-3
If your position requires a master's or higher and involves independent research judgment, EB-2 typically applies. If a bachelor's degree satisfies the minimum, it likely falls under EB-3. The classification affects your priority date and wait time, especially for India-born applicants.
Ask employers about PERM timing before accepting an offer
PERM recruitment must occur after the employer has a bona fide opening but before you're hired into that permanent role. Confirm your prospective employer understands this sequence and has counsel engaged, since starting PERM after you've already started can invalidate the process.
Verify your degree equivalency meets DOL's prevailing wage level
Foreign doctoral degrees from institutions outside the U.S. must be evaluated for equivalency. DOL uses credential evaluation reports during PERM audits. Have a NACES-member evaluator confirm your degree maps to a U.S. Ph.D. before your employer submits the PERM application.
Green Card Research Scientist: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Research Scientist roles typically qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Most Research Scientist positions at universities, pharmaceutical companies, and national laboratories qualify under EB-2 because the role requires a master's or doctoral degree in a specific scientific field. If the posted minimum is a bachelor's degree, the role falls under EB-3. Your employer's PERM application must reflect the actual minimum requirement for that position, not your personal qualifications.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for Research Scientist roles?
H-1B visa is a temporary nonimmigrant status, capped at 85,000 annually with a lottery, and must be renewed every three years. EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship leads to permanent residency with no annual lottery. PERM adds six to eighteen months to the front of the process, but the employer is investing in your permanent authorization, not a renewable work permit subject to cap uncertainty.
What does the PERM labor certification process look like for a Research Scientist?
Your employer posts the Research Scientist opening through DOL-required recruitment channels, documents that no qualified U.S. worker applied, then submits Form ETA-9089 to DOL for certification. PERM for research roles can attract more applicants than general roles, so your employer's HR team must carefully track and document each candidate evaluation. Once DOL certifies the application, your employer files the I-140 petition with USCIS.
How do I find Research Scientist employers who already sponsor green cards?
Use Migrate Mate to search Research Scientist roles filtered by employers with confirmed EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history. This saves time by connecting you with organizations that have existing immigration counsel, active PERM pipelines, and HR staff experienced in the process, rather than employers who would be navigating it for the first time.
Can my foreign doctoral degree support an EB-2 PERM application?
Yes, but DOL requires documentation that your degree is equivalent to a U.S. doctoral degree. Your employer should obtain a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization before filing the PERM application. If DOL audits the case and the evaluation is missing or incomplete, it can suspend certification. Request the evaluation early so it's ready when your employer submits Form ETA-9089.
