Florida Tech is looking for a social media specialist to help us turn awareness into affinity and attention into action—while meaningfully contributing to the voice of the university across key platforms. The Social Media Specialist role blends creative content work and social media responsibilities with the realities of higher education marketing communications: thoughtful planning, careful review, and consistent, tactful execution. You’ll create and engage, but also operate within established brand, legal, and institutional guidelines. You’ll own a meaningful portion of your creative work, while also executing assigned projects—a balance of marketing-driven social media and institutional communications needs. The Social Media Specialist is empowered to inform, assist and most importantly delight prospective students and their families via strategic content development, brand storytelling, and direct relational activities such as answering FAQs or "going the extra mile" to help someone who reaches out via comment or direct message. The Social Media Specialist closely collaborates with members of the Marketing, Web, Creative and Communications teams on content planning and development slated for all social media platforms, though focus is placed on the platforms best positioned to impact new student enrollment, which include Instagram, Tiktok and a higher education enrollment platform/app called ZeeMee.
Job Responsibilities
- Plan, capture, and produce authentic content (video, photo, interviews, writing) that documents student life, events, and key moments across platforms
- Provide real-time, on-the-ground coverage of student activities and university events—engage people confidently, capture photos and video assets, and turn around platform-appropriate content quickly
- Write and communicate effectively across audiences—prospective students, families, and the broader community—adapting tone while maintaining brand voice and reputation
- Manage day-to-day social engagement—respond appropriately to comments, DMs, and community interactions professionally; support conversations on platforms like ZeeMee; partner with admissions to address inquiries and nurture prospective students
- Operate with strong judgment—navigate sensitive situations, represent the institution well, and protect brand integrity in real time
- Contribute to strategy and optimization—support content planning, calendaring, scheduling, social listening, and performance reporting; adjust quickly as priorities and conversations evolve
- Collaborate and support broadly—work cross-functionally and take on additional writing, video, and communications tasks as needed
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a related field (i.e. advertising, communications, marketing, creative writing, etc.) or bachelor's degree in a non-related field with significant knowledge of and experience with social media and content creation.
Preferred Experience/Skills
- Strong writing and storytelling, with the ability to adapt voice across audiences and platforms
- Video-first content production—shooting, editing and a sharp instinct for short-form pacing and clarity
- Solid technical toolkit—digital photography, production equipment (cameras, mics, tripods), and competency with video editing and office software
- Social media experience and fluency—cross-platform (Instagram, TikTok, etc.) understanding and skills, with a strong grasp of trends, culture, and native content formats (experience with Reddit, Discord, Wikipedia, and other social-adjacent platforms a plus)
- Confident, personable communicator—comfortable engaging others, conducting interviews, and representing the institution with sound judgment and professionalism
- Adaptable, easygoing, professional, collaborative, and service-oriented—able to take direction, incorporate feedback, pivot quickly, and support a community-focused, customer-first approach
Technical Skills
- Adobe Creative Cloud: Photoshop, Premier, Lightroom, Audition
- Content management systems (i.e. Wordpress, Terminal Four)
- Digital photography and video production equipment (i.e. cameras, lenses, lighting, audio/mics)
- Microsoft Office

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Social Media Specialist
Document your degree field precisely
PERM requires your degree to align with the job description. A communications or marketing degree maps cleanly to Social Media Specialist duties. A general business degree may need supplemental coursework documentation to satisfy the DOL's equivalency standard.
Target employers with PERM filing history
Search for Social Media Specialist roles at mid-size and enterprise companies that have previously filed PERM applications. Employers who have sponsored before understand the process and are far less likely to withdraw sponsorship mid-filing due to cost or complexity concerns.
Find green card jobs through Migrate Mate
Search Social Media Specialist roles on Migrate Mate, which filters for employers actively sponsoring employment-based green cards. This saves weeks spent manually screening postings that never mention PERM or EB-3 sponsorship availability.
Clarify sponsorship scope before accepting an offer
Ask whether the employer covers EB-2 or EB-3, who pays attorney fees, and whether they sponsor adjustment of status or consular processing. Getting this in writing before signing protects you if the employer's immigration policy changes after you join.
Understand your PERM wage level placement
DOL assigns your role a prevailing wage level based on duties and experience required. For Social Media Specialists, Level I or II placements are common. Use OFLC Wage Search to verify your offered salary meets the minimum before PERM is filed.
Build a portfolio that demonstrates specialty occupation depth
USCIS scrutinizes whether Social Media Specialist duties require a bachelor's degree specifically. Quantified campaign results, platform-specific strategy work, and analytics reporting in your portfolio all support the employer's specialty occupation argument during I-140 adjudication.

Find Social Media Specialist JobsSocial Media Specialist Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Social Media Specialist role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most Social Media Specialist positions qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers requiring a bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, or a related field. EB-2 applies if the role requires an advanced degree or the employer can demonstrate the position warrants it. The employer's job description and minimum requirements drive which category applies, and DOL reviews both during PERM labor certification.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
Green card sponsorship through PERM and I-140 targets permanent residency, not a temporary work period. There is no annual lottery at the EB-3 level for most countries, so the path forward is predictable once PERM is certified. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM alone takes six to twelve months, followed by I-140 adjudication and a priority date wait that varies significantly by country of birth.
What does the PERM labor certification process require from a Social Media Specialist applicant?
PERM is driven by the employer, not you. Your employer must conduct a DOL-mandated recruitment campaign proving no qualified U.S. worker was available for the role. Your responsibility is ensuring your credentials match the job requirements exactly as written in the PERM application. Any gap between your actual qualifications and the stated minimum requirements can trigger a denial or audit.
How can I find Social Media Specialist jobs that include green card sponsorship?
Most job postings do not advertise PERM sponsorship upfront, which makes filtering by visa type difficult on general platforms. Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface roles where employers have active employment-based green card sponsorship history, so you can focus your search on companies already committed to the PERM process rather than asking employers one by one.
Can my employer start the green card process while I am on an H-1B or OPT?
Yes. Employers can file PERM and I-140 while you hold H-1B status or are on OPT, as long as you are authorized to work. Filing early matters because your priority date is set when PERM is submitted or I-140 is filed under EB-2 NIW. An approved I-140 also lets you extend H-1B status beyond six years under AC21 portability provisions if your priority date is not yet current.
