Green Card Structural Designer Jobs
Structural Designer roles qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM labor certification, where your employer documents the hiring process before filing an I-140 petition on your behalf. Engineering and design firms regularly sponsor foreign professionals in this specialty occupation, leading to permanent residency rather than a temporary visa status.

Align your credentials with PERM requirements
PERM requires your employer to define minimum job requirements before advertising the role. Make sure your degree, field of study, and professional experience match the posted requirements exactly, since discrepancies between your background and the job ad can stall the labor certification.
Target firms with active EB-3 filing history
Engineering consultancies and construction firms that regularly bid on federal or infrastructure projects tend to have established PERM workflows. Search the DOL OFLC disclosure data by occupation code to identify Structural Designer employers who have filed labor certifications in the past two years.
Use Migrate Mate to filter green card sponsoring employers
Migrate Mate lets you search Structural Designer openings specifically at employers with documented green card sponsorship history, so you skip firms that have never run PERM. Filter by role and location to build a targeted list before you apply.
Verify your prevailing wage tier early
DOL assigns your role a prevailing wage level using the OFLC Wage Search before your employer files the PERM application. Your actual offered salary must meet or exceed that level, so confirming your wage tier during negotiations prevents delays after the offer is accepted.
Ask employers about their EB-2 versus EB-3 preference
Structural Designer roles can qualify under EB-2 if your position requires an advanced degree, or EB-3 if a bachelor's degree is the stated minimum. Clarify which category the employer intends to file under, since EB-2 priority dates are typically current faster for most nationalities.
Prepare a credential evaluation before your first interview
Foreign engineering degrees outside a four-year U.S. bachelor's program require a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization to satisfy PERM educational requirements. Having this evaluation completed in advance signals readiness to employers and removes a common bottleneck after an offer is extended.
Green Card Structural Designer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Structural Designer role qualify as a specialty occupation for green card sponsorship?
Yes. Structural Designer positions typically require at least a bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or architectural engineering, which satisfies the specialty occupation standard used in both PERM labor certification and I-140 petitions. DOL and USCIS both recognize engineering design roles as requiring specialized knowledge, so most employers can document the educational requirement without difficulty during the PERM advertising phase.
How is the EB-3 green card process different from an H-1B for a Structural Designer?
The H-1B visa is a temporary work visa subject to an annual lottery cap, while EB-3 leads to permanent residency with no lottery. The PERM process takes longer upfront, typically one to two years before an immigrant visa becomes available, but there is no cap on EB-3 petitions themselves. For many nationalities outside India and China, EB-3 priority dates remain current, making the total timeline comparable to or shorter than repeated H-1B cycles.
What documentation should I prepare before my employer starts the PERM process?
Gather your academic transcripts, degree certificates with official translations if applicable, and a credential evaluation from a NACES-member evaluator if your degree is from outside the United States. You'll also need employment verification letters from past employers documenting your job duties and dates, since PERM audits frequently request this evidence to confirm you meet the posted minimum requirements for the Structural Designer role.
Where can I find Structural Designer jobs where the employer already sponsors green cards?
Migrate Mate lets you search Structural Designer openings filtered by employers with verified green card sponsorship history, so you avoid spending time applying to firms that have never filed a PERM application. Focusing your search this way is particularly useful because not all engineering firms have in-house immigration counsel or prior experience running the PERM advertising process.
Can my employer start the green card process while I am on an H-1B?
Yes, and starting early is generally advantageous. An employer can file a PERM application and an I-140 petition while you remain on H-1B status. Once your priority date becomes current, you can file for adjustment of status without leaving the country. USCIS also allows H-1B extensions beyond the standard six-year limit if an approved I-140 is on file, which protects your work authorization during a long wait.
