Green Card Student Advisor Jobs
Student Advisor roles at U.S. universities and colleges qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process. Employers file on your behalf, certifying no qualified U.S. workers are available. Sponsorship leads to permanent residency, not a temporary visa, making this one of the most stable paths for foreign education professionals.

Translate your credentials for PERM review
PERM requires your foreign degree to match the minimum requirements listed in the job description. Get a credential evaluation that maps your education to a U.S. bachelor's or master's degree in counseling, education, or a related field before applying.
Target institutions with established sponsorship infrastructure
Large public universities and community college systems regularly sponsor Student Advisors through PERM because they have in-house legal teams familiar with EB-3 filings. Smaller private institutions often lack this infrastructure and may decline to initiate the process.
Search green card sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by Student Advisor roles at employers with active PERM filing history. Migrate Mate surfaces this data so you can prioritize outreach toward institutions that have already sponsored similar positions, not just those open to the idea.
Clarify the EB-2 versus EB-3 track with your employer
Student Advisor roles typically fall under EB-3, but if the position requires a master's degree, your employer may qualify you for EB-2. The distinction affects your priority date and wait time, so confirm which track the employer intends to file under before accepting an offer.
Understand the PERM recruitment documentation requirements
Your employer must run DOL-mandated recruitment steps before filing and retain the records for five years. Ask HR whether they've completed these steps recently or are starting fresh, since the timeline to your I-140 filing depends on it.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
DOL sets the minimum wage your employer must pay you under PERM. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for Student Advisor roles in your target city before salary discussions, so you know the floor the employer is already required to meet.
Green Card Student Advisor: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Student Advisor roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most Student Advisor positions qualify under EB-3 as professional roles requiring a bachelor's degree. If the employer's job description specifies a master's degree as a minimum requirement, the role may qualify under EB-2. The classification depends on what the employer documents in the PERM application, not on your personal credentials alone.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for Student Advisors?
H-1B visa sponsorship is temporary and subject to an annual lottery, while PERM leads to permanent residency with no cap concerns at the EB-3 level for most nationalities. The PERM process is employer-driven and typically takes one to two years from labor certification through I-140 approval, but the outcome is a green card rather than a renewable nonimmigrant status.
How do I find Student Advisor employers that sponsor green cards?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Student Advisor roles filtered by employers with verified PERM filing history. This lets you focus your applications on institutions that have already sponsored similar positions rather than spending time on employers who are unfamiliar with or unwilling to start the PERM process.
Can my employer start PERM sponsorship while I'm on an H-1B or OPT?
Yes. Employers can file a PERM labor certification on your behalf while you're working in a valid nonimmigrant status. Starting early is practical because PERM processing at DOL, followed by the I-140 petition at USCIS, can take well over a year before you reach the adjustment of status stage.
What happens to my green card case if I change employers partway through the process?
If your I-140 has been approved for more than 180 days and your priority date is current or close, you may be able to port your green card case to a new employer in a same or similar occupation under AC21 portability rules. Changing employers before I-140 approval generally requires starting the PERM process over with the new institution.
