Translate your credentials for PERM documentation
Foreign academic transcripts and degree equivalencies must be evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluator before your employer files PERM. Get a course-by-course evaluation, not just a general equivalency, since DOL scrutinizes chemistry faculty credential matches closely.
Target research universities with active PERM history
R1 and R2 institutions filing PERM for chemistry faculty are documented in OFLC disclosure data. Prioritize departments running federally funded research programs, since grant-backed labs are more likely to justify permanent sponsorship over a temporary work authorization arrangement.
Search verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Chemistry Professor openings by employers with confirmed green card sponsorship history. This cuts the time spent cold-applying to departments that haven't sponsored EB-2 or EB-3 positions before.
Clarify EB-2 versus EB-3 eligibility before accepting an offer
If your doctorate is in a closely related field rather than chemistry specifically, your employer may default to EB-3 professional rather than EB-2 advanced degree. Ask HR whether they intend to file EB-2 and confirm the job description requires an advanced degree as a minimum.
Ask your department about the PERM recruitment timeline
PERM requires the employer to run a DOL-mandated recruitment process before filing, which takes at least 60 days. Starting after your H-1B visa approval can delay green card filing by months, so ask whether your department plans to begin PERM recruitment concurrently with your visa transfer.
Verify the prevailing wage before your offer letter is finalized
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for chemistry faculty in the hiring location. Run the OFLC Wage Search using your SOC code before your offer is signed, so you can flag any discrepancy before the I-140 stage.
Green Card Chemistry Professor: Frequently Asked Questions
Do most U.S. universities sponsor Chemistry Professors for a green card?
Research universities and many four-year colleges regularly sponsor chemistry faculty through EB-2 and EB-3. Community colleges and smaller teaching-focused institutions are less consistent, since PERM sponsorship requires dedicated HR capacity and legal resources. Your strongest prospects are at departments with active research programs and existing relationships with immigration counsel.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B provides temporary status for up to six years and is subject to the annual cap and lottery for most employers. PERM-based green card sponsorship leads to permanent residency, has no annual cap at the petition stage, and lets you stay in the same role indefinitely. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM and I-140 together typically take one to two years before you can file for adjustment of status.
What does the PERM process actually require from a chemistry faculty employer?
Your employer must conduct a formal DOL-supervised recruitment campaign to confirm no qualified U.S. workers are available for the position. This includes placing job ads in specific formats, documenting applicant rejections with lawful reasons, and filing Form 9089 with OFLC. The department chair and HR must both be involved, and the process cannot begin until after you have a signed offer.
Can I search for Chemistry Professor jobs that specifically offer green card sponsorship?
Yes. Migrate Mate lets you filter Chemistry Professor openings by employers with documented EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history, so you're only seeing roles where the institution has already gone through the PERM process for similar positions. That's a more reliable signal than a generic 'willing to sponsor' line in a job posting.
Does my chemistry doctorate need to be from a U.S. institution to qualify for EB-2?
No. USCIS accepts foreign doctoral degrees for EB-2 advanced degree petitions as long as the degree is evaluated as equivalent to a U.S. doctorate by a recognized credential evaluation service. A course-by-course evaluation from a NACES-member organization is the standard your employer's immigration attorney will request when preparing the I-140 petition.
