Green Card Writer Jobs
Writer roles qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in English, communications, journalism, or a related field. Your employer files a PERM labor certification with DOL before petitioning USCIS, making permanent residency the destination rather than a temporary work authorization.

Job Summary
The Writer is an integral part of the university’s Communications Team, finding and telling the stories of our students, faculty, staff, leadership and alumni for Reporter (our twice-weekly faculty/staff e-news) and our News site, as well as for specific departments and units. Our approach is journalistic and story-centered. We welcome applications from like-minded writers, with clips to demonstrate. The Writer will report to the Director of Communications and be part of a team of committed and creative professionals: a Senior Writer/Managing Editor, a Digital Media Manager and a Photographer. The Communications Team is part of the Office of External Relations, which also includes the Marketing, Web Services and Government Relations teams. All teams collaborate closely with one another.
The Writer must have demonstrated talents for producing high-quality written work on deadline, gathering complex information and translating it clearly and accurately for a variety of audiences, synthesizing feedback from multiple sources, and producing content that is engaging, easily understood and can be used across platforms. A successful candidate will be self-motivated, curious, flexible, versatile, highly collaborative, deadline- and detail-oriented, and an excellent time manager.
This position covers the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Education, Health and Human Services, in addition to general university news. Accordingly, we are especially interested in hearing from writers who are well-versed in faculty research, engineering, computer science, health and human services, and/or education, while also able to cover other topics. Writers who demonstrate an ability to quickly learn about these areas will also make strong candidates. Professional journalism experience and/or experience storytelling for higher education strongly preferred.

Document your degree field precisely
PERM requires your degree to align with the specific Writer role being sponsored. A communications or journalism degree supports most editorial positions, but a creative writing or liberal arts degree may need supplemental documentation showing it meets the job's educational requirements.
Target publishers with established PERM history
Media companies, corporate content teams, and university publishing houses file PERM sponsorships more consistently than small agencies. Search DOL's foreign labor certification disclosure data to identify which employers have sponsored Writer roles in the past two years.
Separate your writing portfolio from your resume
PERM job descriptions focus on minimum requirements, not accomplishments. Prepare a separate portfolio that demonstrates specialty occupation depth, such as technical writing, grant writing, or specialized editorial work, since your published clips will matter more during the I-140 stage than your resume formatting.
Search green card sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filtering by employers who have sponsored Writer or content roles historically saves weeks of manual research. Migrate Mate surfaces companies with active green card filing history, so you can focus your applications on employers already familiar with PERM sponsorship obligations.
Clarify sponsorship scope before accepting an offer
Some employers will sponsor an H-1B visa but not a green card, or will only agree to EB-3 rather than EB-2. Ask directly during the offer stage which preference category the employer will file under and whether they use outside counsel or handle PERM filings in-house.
Understand how the prevailing wage affects your offer
DOL sets a prevailing wage for each Writer position based on job duties, location, and experience level using OFLC Wage Search. Your offered salary must meet or exceed that level throughout the PERM process, so confirm the wage determination before you negotiate your compensation.
Green Card Writer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Writer role qualify as a specialty occupation for green card sponsorship?
Yes, Writer positions typically qualify under EB-2 or EB-3 when the employer can demonstrate the role normally requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as journalism, English, or communications. Technical writers, grant writers, and editorial roles with specialized subject matter often meet this threshold more clearly than general content roles, so the specific job duties listed in the PERM application matter significantly.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for writers?
H-1B sponsorship is temporary, capped at 65,000 new visas annually, and subject to lottery selection. PERM green card sponsorship has no annual cap at the EB-3 level for most countries outside India and China, and it leads to permanent residency rather than a temporary status. The process is longer overall, typically two to four years from PERM filing to a green card, but it removes the uncertainty of lottery-based approval.
How can I find employers who sponsor green cards for Writer jobs?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for employers with documented green card sponsorship history in writing and content roles. This is more reliable than filtering general job postings, since most employers don't advertise PERM sponsorship upfront. Focusing on companies that have already completed the PERM process for similar roles significantly improves your chances of securing a sponsoring offer.
What happens to my green card case if I change employers mid-process?
If you change employers after your I-140 petition has been approved for more than 180 days, you may be able to port your priority date to a new employer's petition in the same or a similar occupational classification under AC21 portability rules. For writers, a move from one editorial role to a comparable writing position at a new company generally qualifies, but your new employer must file a fresh PERM labor certification.
Does the specific type of writing work I do affect which EB preference category I qualify for?
Yes. EB-2 requires the position to normally demand an advanced degree or its equivalent, while EB-3 covers roles requiring at least a bachelor's degree. Highly specialized writing roles, such as medical writing, legal writing, or policy analysis, more readily support an EB-2 classification. General content writing or copywriting roles are more commonly sponsored under EB-3, which is still a fully viable path to a green card for most nationalities.
