Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Addiction Psychiatrist
Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
International medical graduates must hold active ECFMG certification before any H-1B employer can file your petition. Confirm your certification status and check that your medical school credentials are recognized before reaching out to sponsors.
Target cap-exempt employers for faster filing
Universities, teaching hospitals, and nonprofit research institutions are cap-exempt under USCIS rules, meaning they can file your H-1B petition year-round without waiting for the April lottery. Psychiatry departments at academic medical centers fill most addiction medicine openings this way.
Look up prevailing wages by practice setting
Addiction psychiatry wages vary significantly between inpatient hospital units, opioid treatment programs, and outpatient clinics. Use the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating offers so your salary aligns with DOL Level II or III wages for your specific work location and setting.
Search Migrate Mate for verified H-1B sponsors
Filter your job search to employers with documented LCA filing history in behavioral health and addiction medicine. Migrate Mate surfaces this DOL data by employer and occupation, so you avoid outreach to practices that have never sponsored an H-1B.
Confirm your DEA registration transfers with the role
Addiction psychiatry requires a DEA registration to prescribe buprenorphine and methadone. When changing employers, your registration doesn't automatically transfer. Coordinate the timing of your H-1B petition start date with your new DEA registration to avoid a gap in prescribing authority.
Ask whether premium processing is included in your offer
Standard H-1B adjudication can take several months, which creates problems if your residency or fellowship ends before approval. Request that your employer includes USCIS premium processing in the offer letter so your petition is decided within 15 business days.
H-1B Visa Addiction Psychiatrist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Addiction Psychiatrist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Addiction Psychiatry requires a medical degree and typically board certification or eligibility in psychiatry or addiction medicine, satisfying USCIS's specialty occupation definition. The O*NET profile for Physicians and Surgeons classifies this as a Job Zone 5 role requiring a doctoral-level credential, which supports the specialty occupation determination in your petition.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Addiction Psychiatrists?
Academic medical centers, VA hospitals, federally qualified health centers, and nonprofit health systems are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for addiction psychiatry. Many file cap-exempt petitions, which means no lottery and no April deadline. For-profit private practices and smaller outpatient clinics sponsor less frequently and must compete in the annual cap lottery. You can browse employers with active LCA filing history in behavioral health on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect addiction psychiatry job timing?
If your target employer is cap-subject, USCIS accepts registrations in March for an October 1 start date. That timing gap can conflict with fellowship end dates or existing employment authorization. Cap-exempt employers, including most teaching hospitals and university-affiliated clinics, can file at any time, giving you more flexibility on start dates and reducing lottery risk entirely.
Can I switch from a J-1 waiver position to an H-1B in addiction psychiatry?
Yes, but the transition requires careful timing. If you completed a J-1 visa waiver obligation at a shortage area facility, you need to confirm your two-year home residency requirement is waived before filing an H-1B. Your new employer files the H-1B petition, and USCIS can adjudicate it while you're still completing your waiver service if the timeline is structured correctly with your immigration attorney.
What documentation does my employer need to file my H-1B as an Addiction Psychiatrist?
Your employer needs your medical diploma, ECFMG certificate if you're an international medical graduate, board certification or examination scores, state medical license or license application confirmation, and a completed Labor Condition Application certified by DOL. The LCA must specify the work location and confirm wages meet prevailing wage standards. Your employer's attorney typically gathers these through a document checklist once the offer is accepted.
