Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as an Operating Room Technician
Verify your credential meets specialty occupation standards
USCIS requires Operating Room Technician roles to demand at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent in a directly related field. Confirm your surgical technology program and any NBSTSA certification align with the specialty occupation definition before applying.
Target health systems with active LCA filing histories
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up Labor Condition Application filings under SOC code 29-2055. Health systems that filed repeatedly in recent fiscal years are far more likely to have an established H-1B sponsorship process already in place.
Search H-1B-sponsoring surgical employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by Operating Room Technician roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have verified H-1B filing histories. This surfaces active sponsors you can target directly, rather than applying broadly and discovering late that a facility won't file.
Address the cap-subject lottery timing with your offer
Most hospital employers file H-1B petitions in April for an October 1 start date. When negotiating your offer, confirm your employer's internal HR deadline for submitting lottery registrations, which USCIS opens each March, so your timeline stays intact.
Prepare an equivalency evaluation if your degree is foreign
If your surgical technology training was completed outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization before your employer files. USCIS adjudicators scrutinize foreign degree equivalency for allied health roles and an unevaluated credential delays the petition.
Confirm the employer is enrolled in E-Verify before accepting
H-1B employers are required to use E-Verify to confirm your work authorization on day one. Ask HR directly whether the facility is enrolled. Unenrolled employers cannot legally onboard you under H-1B status, which can collapse an otherwise solid offer.
H-1B Visa Operating Room Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Operating Room Technician role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. USCIS requires the role to normally demand a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific related field. Many facilities post OR Tech jobs requiring only an associate degree or NBSTSA certification, which can fail the specialty occupation test. Roles explicitly requiring a bachelor's in surgical technology or a closely related health sciences field are on stronger footing.
Which types of employers are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas for this role?
Large academic medical centers, multi-hospital health systems, and Veterans Affairs facilities have the most established H-1B sponsorship infrastructure for allied health roles. Ambulatory surgery centers and smaller community hospitals occasionally sponsor but often lack in-house immigration counsel to manage the filing. You can browse employers with verified H-1B filing histories for this role on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B lottery affect my start date as an OR Technician?
Cap-subject H-1B petitions are registered in March and, if selected, allow an October 1 start date. That means your employer must submit your registration roughly six months before you can legally begin work. Hospitals with cap-exempt status, such as nonprofit research institutions or certain teaching hospitals affiliated with higher education, can file anytime and bypass the lottery entirely.
What prevailing wage level should I expect for this role under an H-1B petition?
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your specific job title, SOC code, and geographic area. Prevailing wages vary significantly by metropolitan area and are updated annually. You can look up the applicable wage for your location using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer to confirm the posted salary meets the legal minimum.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new OR Technician position at a different hospital?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new H-1B petition on your behalf, without waiting for USCIS to approve it, as long as your prior status was maintained and you've been in H-1B status for at least 180 days. The new employer must still file a certified LCA and a full I-129 petition before your first day.
