H-1B Visa Speech Therapist Jobs
Speech therapists qualify for H-1B sponsorship as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in communication sciences or disorders. Most positions in hospitals, school districts, and private clinics actively file LCAs through DOL. State licensure requirements add a credential step that shapes your employer search and filing timeline.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Speech Therapist
Verify your state license before applying
H-1B approval doesn't authorize you to practice without a valid state SLP license. Confirm your target state's licensure timeline with its board early, since gaps between your start date and license issuance can complicate petition filings.
Check LCA filings by occupation code
Speech therapists fall under SOC code 29-1127. Search DOL's OFLC Wage Search filtered to that code to see which employers have filed LCAs for SLP roles, giving you a verified list of active H-1B sponsors before you apply.
Target healthcare systems over staffing agencies
Direct hospital employers file H-1B petitions naming themselves as the worksite employer, which avoids the third-party placement complexity that USCIS scrutinizes in staffing arrangements. School districts and hospital networks are typically cleaner sponsorship paths.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsors
Search Migrate Mate to find speech therapist roles at employers with confirmed H-1B filing history. Filtering by occupation and sponsorship status removes positions at employers unlikely to file, so you focus applications where sponsorship is already established.
Negotiate your offer to meet prevailing wage
Your employer's LCA must certify your salary meets the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Cross-reference the offered salary against the OFLC Wage Search before signing, since filing at below-prevailing wage triggers DOL deficiency and delays your petition.
Understand cap-exempt employer pathways
Hospitals affiliated with nonprofit research institutions and university health systems are often cap-exempt, meaning they can file your H-1B petition outside the annual lottery. Confirming an employer's cap-exempt status before the lottery deadline can accelerate your timeline significantly.

Find Speech Therapist JobsSpeech Therapist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a speech therapist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS consistently classifies speech-language pathology as a specialty occupation because a bachelor's degree or higher in communication sciences and disorders is the standard minimum requirement for the role. The O*NET profile for SOC 29-1127 confirms the degree requirement, which supports the specialty occupation determination employers include in their H-1B petitions.
Do I need a state license before my employer can file my H-1B petition?
Not necessarily before filing, but you must hold a valid state license before you begin practicing. Some employers file the petition with a pending license and condition the start date on licensure. Others require the license in hand before initiating sponsorship. Clarify this with the employer during the offer stage so the petition timeline accounts for your state board's processing window.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for speech therapists?
Hospital systems, children's rehabilitation centers, school districts partnered with staffing firms that hold the employer of record status, and university-affiliated health clinics are the most active sponsors. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified LCA filing history for SLP roles, so you can identify which organizations have an established H-1B sponsorship process rather than guessing from job postings.
How does the H-1B lottery affect speech therapist job seekers?
Most for-profit employers are subject to the annual H-1B cap and lottery, which USCIS runs each spring for the following fiscal year. If your employer is cap-subject and you aren't selected, you can't start until the next cycle. Nonprofit hospitals, government entities, and higher-education institutions are cap-exempt and can file at any time, bypassing the lottery entirely.
What documentation does an employer typically need to sponsor a speech therapist on H-1B?
The employer files an LCA with DOL certifying the prevailing wage and working conditions, then submits Form I-129 to USCIS with evidence that the role requires a degree in a specific field, your credentials and transcripts, and the state license or confirmation it's pending. For foreign-trained SLPs, a credential evaluation from a recognized agency is also standard to establish degree equivalency.
