Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and neuropsychology practice. A doctorate in clinical psychology with a neuropsychology focus typically qualifies, but a general psychology master's degree alone will not. Pull the O*NET occupation profile to confirm the education benchmark before applying.
Target cap-exempt employers first
Hospitals affiliated with universities, VA medical centers, and nonprofit research institutions are cap-exempt H-1B sponsors, meaning they can file year-round without lottery exposure. These settings also dominate neuropsychology hiring, so cap-exempt status aligns naturally with your job search.
Check LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Before contacting any employer, search Migrate Mate to see their DOL Labor Condition Application filing history for neuropsychologist and related SOC codes. This shows which health systems and institutions have actually sponsored the role, not just posted about it.
Get your EPPP and state licensure lined up
Many H-1B neuropsychologist positions require active state licensure or eligibility, not just a degree. Confirm you've passed the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology and identify which state's licensure your target employers require before the offer stage, since delays here can stall the I-129 filing.
Understand how the LCA wage level affects your offer
Your employer must certify your offered wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for the neuropsychologist SOC code in that metro area. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up Level I through Level IV wage tiers so you can evaluate whether an offer satisfies the requirement before signing.
Time your cap-subject applications around the lottery
For private-sector employers subject to the H-1B cap, USCIS opens registration in March for an October 1 start date. Coordinate with your employer's legal team no later than January to prepare the registration, since missing the window means waiting a full year for the next cycle.

Find Neuropsychologist JobsNeuropsychologist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a neuropsychologist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Neuropsychology meets USCIS specialty occupation criteria because the position normally requires at minimum a doctoral degree in neuropsychology or a directly related clinical field. USCIS looks at whether the role requires theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge, which neuropsychological assessment and treatment planning satisfy. A general psychology bachelor's degree is not sufficient on its own.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for neuropsychologists?
Academic medical centers, VA hospitals, children's hospitals, and neurological research institutes are among the most consistent H-1B sponsors for neuropsychologist roles. Many of these qualify as cap-exempt institutions, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round without lottery participation. You can identify employers with active LCA filing history for this role on Migrate Mate before reaching out.
Does state licensure affect my H-1B neuropsychologist petition?
Yes, directly. Most neuropsychologist positions require state licensure or documented eligibility as a condition of employment, and USCIS expects the employer to address licensure status in the I-129 petition. If you're license-eligible but not yet licensed, your employer should document the pathway to full licensure and confirm the position allows a supervised or provisional period while you complete that process.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement work for neuropsychologists?
Before USCIS will approve the H-1B petition, your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL certifying your offered wage meets the prevailing wage for the neuropsychologist SOC code in the hiring location. Wage levels run from Level I through Level IV depending on experience and complexity. You can check current prevailing wage figures by metropolitan area using the OFLC Wage Search.
Can I switch neuropsychologist employers while on H-1B status?
Yes, under H-1B portability rules established by AC21, you can start working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed, provided your current H-1B has been approved for at least 180 days. Your new employer must file before or on your last day with the current sponsor. The new position must also qualify as a specialty occupation in neuropsychology.
