Verify your credential equivalency early
USCIS requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. If your nursing degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before applying, so employers aren't delayed during the petition stage.
Target health systems with active LCA history
Search Migrate Mate to filter Nurse Navigator openings by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for this title. LCA history signals that a health system already understands the H-1B filing process for clinical care-coordination roles.
Confirm the job posting requires a bachelor's degree
Nurse Navigator positions sometimes list a degree as preferred, not required. That wording can undermine the specialty occupation argument during USCIS review. Ask recruiters to confirm the job description reflects a firm degree requirement before accepting an offer.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Your employer must pay at least the prevailing wage for your SOC code and geographic area, as certified on the LCA. Run the OFLC Wage Search for Registered Nurses or Health Educators in your metro before salary negotiations so you know the DOL floor.
Ask about cap-exempt employer status upfront
Hospitals affiliated with a nonprofit research institution or university may qualify as cap-exempt, letting you skip the annual lottery entirely. Confirm this with HR during the interview process, not after you've already cleared other offer stages.
Request premium processing to meet your start date
Standard I-129 adjudication can run several months. If your offer has a firm start date tied to a patient program launch or fiscal-year hiring cycle, ask your employer to file with USCIS premium processing to get a decision within 15 business days.
H-1B Visa Nurse Navigator: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Nurse Navigator role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in nursing, healthcare administration, or a directly related clinical field. The role must be framed around that degree requirement in both the job description and the LCA. Positions that list a degree as preferred rather than required are more vulnerable to a Request for Evidence from USCIS during adjudication.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Nurse Navigator positions?
Large academic medical centers, integrated health systems, cancer treatment networks, and nonprofit hospitals are the most consistent sponsors for this title. These organizations file LCAs regularly for care-coordination roles and typically have in-house or retained immigration counsel. You can browse verified sponsoring employers for Nurse Navigator roles on Migrate Mate, filtered by LCA filing history.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Nurse Navigator employer without losing status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can begin working for a new employer as soon as the transfer petition is filed with USCIS, as long as your previous status was lawfully maintained. You don't need to wait for approval. The new employer must file a new I-129 and LCA reflecting the Nurse Navigator role and your work location.
How does the prevailing wage requirement apply to Nurse Navigator roles?
Your employer must pay you at least the DOL prevailing wage for your job's SOC code in the geographic area where you'll work, as certified on the LCA before the I-129 is filed. Nurse Navigator roles are typically mapped to Registered Nurses or Health Educators depending on duties. You can verify the applicable wage level using the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating your offer.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Nurse Navigator position is eliminated?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to secure a new sponsoring employer and have a transfer petition filed, change to another valid status, or depart the U.S. That grace period applies once per authorized validity period. Filing a new I-129 with a qualifying employer before the 60 days expire maintains your lawful presence while USCIS reviews the transfer.
