Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Dermatology Nurse Practitioner
Verify your NP credentials meet H-1B requirements
H-1B eligibility for Nurse Practitioners depends on holding a master's-level degree, not just state licensure. Confirm your MSN or equivalent satisfies the specialty occupation standard before targeting employers, since a BSN alone typically won't qualify.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Your employer must pay at least the prevailing wage for your occupation and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search using the Nurse Practitioners SOC code before accepting an offer to confirm the salary meets DOL Level I through IV requirements.
Target dermatology groups with existing H-1B LCA filings
Private dermatology practices sponsor less frequently than hospital systems. On Migrate Mate, filter for employers with verified LCA filing history in healthcare to find dermatology groups that have already navigated H-1B sponsorship for clinical NP roles.
Register for the lottery by the March USCIS deadline
H-1B cap-subject registrations open each March for an October 1 start date. Missing the registration window means waiting another full year, so align your job search and offer timeline to give your employer enough lead time to file.
Clarify supervisory structure to avoid RFE issues
USCIS scrutinizes NP petitions when the supervising physician arrangement is ambiguous. Get written documentation of your collaborative practice agreement or supervision structure before filing, as vague employer relationships are a common trigger for Requests for Evidence.
Negotiate employer payment of H-1B filing fees upfront
Employers are legally required to pay certain USCIS H-1B filing fees and cannot deduct them from your wages. Confirm in writing before signing an offer that your employer covers the I-129 petition fee and any applicable asylum program surcharge.
H-1B Visa Dermatology Nurse Practitioner: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Dermatology Nurse Practitioner role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, but the qualification depends on your degree level, not your job title. USCIS requires that the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, in a specific specialty. For Nurse Practitioners, this generally means holding an MSN or higher. A BSN without a graduate degree typically does not satisfy the specialty occupation standard for an H-1B petition.
Do dermatology private practices sponsor H-1B visas?
Some do, but they sponsor far less frequently than large hospital systems or academic medical centers. Smaller practices often lack in-house HR or immigration counsel, which makes them less likely to initiate a new sponsorship. Searching Migrate Mate for dermatology employers with verified LCA filing history is the fastest way to identify practices that have already completed the sponsorship process for clinical NP roles.
What is the H-1B cap and how does it affect my job search timeline?
Most Dermatology NP positions are with cap-subject employers, meaning your petition competes in the annual H-1B lottery capped at 65,000 general visas. USCIS opens registration each March for an October 1 start date. If you're selected, your employer files the full petition by June. This timeline means you'll typically need an offer secured no later than February to participate in that year's lottery cycle.
Can a Dermatology NP employer file H-1B if I'm currently on OPT?
Yes, and many NPs use OPT while their H-1B petition is pending. If you're on STEM OPT, the cap-gap provision can extend your work authorization through September 30 if your petition is timely filed and selected. Your employer must be E-Verify enrolled to take advantage of the STEM OPT extension, which is a prerequisite many dermatology practices overlook before hiring international NPs.
What documents should I prepare before an employer agrees to sponsor my H-1B?
You'll need your MSN diploma and official transcripts, your state NP license and prescriptive authority documentation, your collaborative practice agreement or supervising physician letter, and your DEA registration if applicable. Employers also need your I-94, current visa stamp copy, and any prior H-1B approval notices. Having these organized in advance speeds up the LCA filing and reduces the risk of preventable delays.
