Verify your credentials meet specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree to directly relate to veterinary surgery tech duties. A veterinary technology degree qualifies clearly, but if your degree is in a adjacent science, document how your coursework maps to surgical assistance, anesthesia monitoring, and sterile technique.
Target academic and referral veterinary hospitals
University veterinary teaching hospitals and specialty referral centers file H-1B petitions far more frequently than general practice clinics. Look for employers with dedicated surgery departments, board-certified surgeons on staff, and existing international hires.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified H-1B sponsors
Search Migrate Mate to see which veterinary employers have filed LCAs for surgery technician roles. DOL Labor Condition Application data shows you actual filing history by employer, so you're targeting practices that have sponsored before.
Check the prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Your employer's LCA must certify wages at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your job zone and location. Run your title and metro area through the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating, so you know the floor your offer must meet.
Confirm the employer files before April 1
H-1B cap-subject petitions open in March each year, with employment starting October 1 if selected. If your start date falls mid-year, ask the employer whether they'll file cap-subject or if the role qualifies for a cap-exempt institution like a nonprofit veterinary teaching hospital.
Document surgical caseload and specialty certifications
When USCIS evaluates specialty occupation status for vet surgery techs, hands-on evidence strengthens the petition. Gather letters from supervising surgeons, your VTS certification if you have one, and case logs showing the technical complexity that requires your specific training.
H-1B Visa Veterinary Surgery Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Veterinary Surgery Technician role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
It can qualify, but the employer must demonstrate the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in veterinary technology or a related field. Roles at specialty referral centers or academic teaching hospitals, where surgical complexity demands formal theoretical training, have a stronger case than general practice positions where a two-year associate degree is the typical standard.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas for this role?
University veterinary teaching hospitals, large specialty and emergency referral centers, and corporate veterinary groups with dedicated surgery departments are the most active H-1B sponsors for surgery tech positions. You can browse verified H-1B-sponsoring veterinary employers directly on Migrate Mate, which surfaces DOL LCA filing history so you can see who has sponsored before.
Does a Veterinary Technician Specialist certification help the H-1B petition?
A VTS credential in surgery strengthens the specialty occupation argument considerably. It demonstrates that your role requires knowledge beyond a generalist technician's scope and that professional credentialing bodies recognize the specialty. Include your VTS certification and the specialty academy's requirements when your employer assembles the petition support documentation.
Can my employer sponsor me if I'm currently working on OPT?
Yes. If you're on OPT and your employer wants to retain you long-term, they can file an H-1B cap-subject petition during the March registration window. If your OPT expires before October 1, you may qualify for a cap-gap extension that bridges your status while the petition is pending, provided the petition was filed before your OPT ended.
What should I do if my degree is in biology or a field other than veterinary technology?
USCIS allows a combination of education and progressive work experience to meet the degree requirement for specialty occupation. Three years of qualifying veterinary surgery experience can substitute for one year of a bachelor's degree. You'll need detailed experience letters from supervising veterinarians and documented evidence linking your academic coursework to the surgical duties in the job description.
