Verify your credentials meet USCIS standards
USCIS requires your anesthesia degree to be equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's or higher in a directly related field. If you trained abroad, get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before applying to roles.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Your employer's LCA must certify wages at or above the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Pull the OFLC Wage Search figures for anesthetist roles in your target metro before negotiating, so you can spot underpayment before it becomes a filing problem.
Target health systems with in-house immigration teams
Large hospital networks and academic medical centers typically have dedicated HR teams that manage H-1B filings annually. Check Migrate Mate to filter anesthetist roles by employers with active LCA filing history in your specialty.
Confirm the role's SOC code before the LCA is filed
Anesthetists are classified under a specific SOC code distinct from anesthesiologists. A misclassification on the LCA creates a prevailing-wage mismatch that USCIS will flag during adjudication. Review the O*NET occupation profile to confirm the correct designation with your employer's attorney.
Ask about cap-exempt employer eligibility early
Universities, nonprofit research hospitals, and government-affiliated medical centers can file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap and lottery. If you're interviewing at a teaching hospital or academic health system, confirm their cap-exempt status before the April registration window closes.
Request premium processing if your start date is firm
USCIS standard processing can take several months. If your credentialing timeline or employment contract has a hard start date, ask your employer to file Form I-907 for premium processing, which guarantees a 15-business-day adjudication decision.

Does an anesthetist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS treats anesthetist positions as specialty occupations because they normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field, such as nursing anesthesia or a clinical anesthesia science program. Your employer will document this requirement in the H-1B petition. Roles that list a degree as preferred rather than required can create problems during adjudication, so confirm the job description uses mandatory degree language before the petition is filed.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for anesthetists?
Hospital systems, academic medical centers, surgical centers, and large multispecialty group practices are the most common H-1B sponsors for anesthetist roles. Academic and nonprofit hospitals that qualify as cap-exempt institutions offer an additional advantage: they can file outside the annual lottery. You can search anesthetist roles filtered by employers with verified LCA filing history on Migrate Mate.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect anesthetist H-1B petitions?
Before filing, your employer must submit a Labor Condition Application to DOL certifying your offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and work location. Anesthetist wages vary significantly by metro area, so a salary competitive in one market may fall below the prevailing wage threshold in another. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage tiers for your target location before accepting an offer.
Can an anesthetist change employers while on H-1B status?
Yes, through H-1B portability. If your new employer files a petition before your current status expires, you can start working for them as soon as USCIS receives the petition, without waiting for approval. The new employer must file a new LCA and I-129 petition, and the role must still qualify as a specialty occupation. Gaps in employment between petitions can complicate portability, so time your transition carefully.
What documentation does an anesthetist need for the H-1B petition?
Your employer's attorney will need your academic transcripts and degree certificates, a credential evaluation if you trained outside the U.S., your current resume or CV, any relevant professional licenses or state certifications, and your passport. If your degree title doesn't directly map to the job description, a professional evaluation letter from a recognized credentials evaluator can strengthen the specialty occupation argument. USCIS may issue a Request for Evidence if documentation is incomplete.
