Verify your degree aligns with the role
H-1B approval for CNC Operator roles depends on demonstrating your degree directly relates to the position. A manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, or machining technology degree strengthens the specialty occupation argument. A general business degree likely won't.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating salary
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for CNC Operator roles in your target metro area. Your offered salary must meet or exceed the Level I–IV wage your employer certifies on the LCA, or the petition can be denied.
Target employers with E-Verify enrollment
H-1B employers must participate in E-Verify. Confirming enrollment before applying saves time and signals the employer has handled work authorization filings before. Manufacturers new to federal contracting are often recently enrolled.
Search LCA filing history with Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter CNC Operator roles by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history. This cuts out manufacturers who list visa sponsorship as open to negotiation but have never actually filed.
Flag your SOC code during the offer stage
CNC Operators are classified under SOC 51-4011 or 51-4012 depending on the machinery type. Confirm with your employer which code they'll use on the LCA, since misclassification can trigger a DOL audit or wage level dispute after filing.
Ask about cap-exempt employer status early
Some manufacturers operate as cap-exempt entities through university research partnerships or nonprofit affiliations. If your employer qualifies, you avoid the H-1B lottery entirely. Ask HR directly and verify through USCIS guidance if their answer is uncertain.

Find CNC Operator JobsCNC Operator H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a CNC Operator role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the role. USCIS requires that the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related specialty. A CNC Operator position tied to a manufacturing engineering or precision machining degree program can qualify. Roles framed as purely manual or vocational, without a degree requirement, typically do not.
How do I find employers who actually sponsor H-1B visas for CNC Operator jobs?
Use Migrate Mate to search CNC Operator roles filtered by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history. DOL LCA disclosure data shows which manufacturers have filed for this occupation and at what wage levels, so you're not relying on a job posting that says 'sponsorship available' without any filing record behind it.
What happens to my H-1B status if I'm laid off from a CNC Operator role?
You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new employer willing to file an H-1B transfer petition, change to another valid status, or depart the country. If a new employer files a transfer petition before the 60 days expire, you can continue working once the receipt notice is issued. USCIS does not extend this grace period.
Can my employer transfer my H-1B to a different CNC machine type or facility location?
A change in worksite to a new metropolitan statistical area requires the employer to file an amended LCA with DOL and post it at the new location before you begin working there. Switching machine types within the same facility generally doesn't require an amended petition unless it materially changes the job duties or wage level.
What wage level should I expect on an LCA for a CNC Operator role?
Most entry-level H-1B CNC Operator positions are filed at Level I or Level II under the DOL's four-tier prevailing wage system. Level I applies to positions requiring routine tasks under close supervision; Level II applies to roles with some complexity or independent judgment. You can verify the applicable wage for your job location and SOC code using the OFLC Wage Search.
