Verify your role meets specialty occupation
Pull the O*NET profile for your coaching specialty and confirm the listed education requirement is a specific bachelor's degree. Generic coaching titles without a degree requirement in a related field are routinely challenged by USCIS during adjudication.
Check prevailing wages before negotiating offers
Run your job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before salary discussions begin. Your offered wage must meet at least the Level I prevailing wage for the role, and underpaying triggers LCA violations that can jeopardize your petition.
Target universities and academic sports programs
Colleges and universities are cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning your petition bypasses the annual lottery entirely. Athletic departments at accredited institutions sponsor coaching staff year-round without waiting for the April registration window.
Find employers with active H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Search Migrate Mate to identify organizations that have filed LCAs for coaching and related sports science roles. Targeting employers with verified H-1B filing history cuts the time you spend on outreach to companies unfamiliar with sponsorship.
Secure a detailed employment contract early
Your employer needs a signed offer letter specifying your title, duties, degree requirement, start date, and worksite before filing the LCA with DOL. Vague or part-time contracts raise specialty occupation questions and can delay or sink the petition.
Prepare for H-1B transfer if you change teams
You can start working for a new employer as soon as the H-1B transfer petition is filed, not after approval. Don't resign your current coaching position until the new petition is receipted to maintain continuous authorized status under portability rules.

Find Coach JobsCoach H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a coaching job qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the role is defined. Coaching positions that require a bachelor's degree in kinesiology, exercise science, sports management, or a directly related field can qualify. Roles where any degree, or no degree, is acceptable typically won't pass USCIS scrutiny. The employer's job description and internal hiring practices both factor into the adjudication.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for coaches?
Universities and colleges are the most reliable pathway because they're cap-exempt H-1B employers, letting you skip the lottery. Professional sports organizations, fitness technology companies, and corporate wellness programs also sponsor coaching roles, but they're subject to the annual cap and registration process. Search Migrate Mate to find employers with active H-1B filing history for coaching occupations.
What documents does your employer need to file your H-1B petition?
Your employer needs your academic transcripts and degree certificates, a detailed job description tying your specific degree field to the role's daily duties, and a certified LCA from DOL confirming the prevailing wage. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization is typically required to establish equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's degree.
Can you coach part-time on an H-1B visa?
Yes, H-1B status allows part-time employment, but the LCA and petition must reflect the actual hours and the corresponding prevailing wage for part-time work in that location. USCIS scrutinizes part-time coaching petitions more closely because reduced hours can raise questions about whether the position genuinely requires a specialized degree, so a precise and well-documented job description is essential.
What happens to your H-1B status if your coaching contract ends mid-season?
You have a 60-day grace period from the end of your employment to find a new H-1B sponsor, change to another valid status, or depart the U.S. If a new employer files an H-1B transfer petition before the grace period expires, you can begin working immediately upon filing. Staying past 60 days without a new petition or status change accrues unlawful presence.
