Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as an Education Consultant
Verify your degree field matches the role
USCIS requires your degree to align specifically with the consulting specialty, not just education broadly. A degree in instructional design supports a curriculum consultant role; a general arts degree may trigger a Request for Evidence.
Target edtech employers with LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter Education Consultant roles by employers who have previously filed Labor Condition Applications, so you're applying to companies with an established H-1B sponsorship process rather than starting that conversation from scratch.
Use OFLC Wage Search before salary negotiations
Look up the prevailing wage for Education Consultant roles in your target metro using OFLC Wage Search. Your offer must meet the DOL wage level tied to your experience, and knowing the floor strengthens your negotiating position.
Clarify SOC code with your employer early
Education Consultant roles can be classified under different Standard Occupational Classification codes depending on duties, which affects the prevailing wage and LCA requirements. Confirm which SOC code the employer intends to use before the petition is drafted.
Document your specialized credentials before filing
Gather transcripts, any state education licensure, and professional certifications like instructional design credentials before the employer files the I-129. USCIS increasingly requests evidence of specialty occupation for consulting roles, and organized documentation reduces RFE risk.
Factor the cap lottery into your start-date planning
Most Education Consultant employers are cap-subject, meaning your petition enters the annual H-1B lottery with an October 1 start date. If you're currently on OPT, confirm your EAD expiration aligns with that timeline and request a cap-gap extension if needed.
H-1B Visa Education Consultant: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Education Consultant role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, if the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as education, curriculum development, instructional design, or organizational learning. Roles where any bachelor's degree would satisfy the requirement can face USCIS scrutiny, so job descriptions that specify a directly related field significantly strengthen the specialty occupation argument.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Education Consultants?
Edtech companies, K-12 consulting firms, higher education institutions, and professional development organizations are the most active sponsors. Universities and nonprofit educational organizations may qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, which means their petitions bypass the annual lottery entirely. Use Migrate Mate to find Education Consultant roles filtered by employers with verified H-1B filing history.
Can I work for multiple clients as an Education Consultant on an H-1B?
Only if each client engagement is structured as work performed for the petitioning employer, not as independent contracting. USCIS requires a valid employer-employee relationship, which means the sponsoring company must control your work assignments. Consultant placements at client sites are permissible, but you cannot independently bill multiple clients under a single H-1B petition.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement apply to Education Consultant roles?
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for the relevant Standard Occupational Classification code in the work location. Education Consultant duties can fall under different SOC classifications depending on whether the focus is curriculum design, training, or academic advising, and each carries its own wage floor that the employer must certify on the Labor Condition Application before USCIS will approve the petition.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Education Consultant contract ends early?
Your H-1B status is tied to the sponsoring employer. If your employment ends, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new employer willing to file an H-1B transfer petition. During that window you cannot work, but a new employer can file a transfer petition and you can begin working once it's received by USCIS, not waiting for final approval.
