Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
H-1B approval for coaching roles hinges on whether your degree directly relates to the position. A kinesiology, sports science, or physical education degree strengthens the case. A general humanities degree paired with coaching experience alone often triggers an RFE from USCIS.
Target NCAA Division I and II programs
Division I and II athletic departments sponsor H-1B petitions far more consistently than high school or recreational programs. Their compliance infrastructure and HR teams already understand the LCA filing process, making the offer-to-petition timeline smoother for you.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter Football Coach roles by employers with active H-1B LCA filing history on Migrate Mate. This surfaces programs that have sponsored coaching staff before, so you're targeting employers already familiar with the petition process rather than educating them from scratch.
Confirm the prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your specific coaching role and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level before salary discussions so you can flag any offer that falls below the threshold USCIS will scrutinize.
Prepare credentials for specialty occupation documentation
Gather transcripts, coaching certifications, and any expert opinion letters that tie your degree to the coaching role's technical requirements. Employers filing for coaching positions often need this documentation ready before the attorney can draft a credible I-129 petition.
Account for the cap and lottery in your timeline
Most coaching positions at for-profit athletic organizations are subject to the annual H-1B cap and lottery. Registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. NCAA and nonprofit university programs may qualify for cap-exempt status, which changes your filing timeline entirely.

Find Football Coach JobsFootball Coach H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Football Coach role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
It can, but it's not automatic. USCIS requires the position to normally demand a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field like kinesiology, sports science, or physical education. Roles at professional organizations and university athletic departments with formal degree requirements in the job description are more defensible than general coaching positions that accept any background.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Football Coach positions?
NCAA Division I and II programs, professional football organizations, and large university athletic departments are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for coaching roles. They have established HR and legal infrastructure for petition filings. High school programs and recreational leagues rarely sponsor H-1B petitions because their positions don't consistently meet the specialty occupation threshold. You can find employers with verified filing history on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B cap affect Football Coach roles?
Coaching positions at for-profit athletic organizations fall under the annual H-1B cap of 85,000 visas, which includes a lottery when registrations exceed that number. Positions at qualifying nonprofit universities or research institutions may be cap-exempt, allowing petitions to be filed year-round without lottery selection. Confirm your prospective employer's cap-exempt status before counting on a specific start date.
What documents should I prepare to support an H-1B petition as a Football Coach?
You'll need official transcripts showing a degree in kinesiology, sports science, physical education, or a closely related field, along with any professional coaching certifications. If your degree field doesn't map directly to the role, a credentials evaluation or expert opinion letter explaining the connection is often required. Your employer's attorney will also need a detailed job description establishing that the role requires a specific degree rather than general experience.
Can I switch Football Coach employers while on an H-1B?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. Once your petition has been pending for 180 days, you can change employers in a same or similar occupational classification without waiting for final approval. Your new employer must file a new H-1B petition before you start work. Coaching roles generally fall under the same SOC code, so portability transfers are straightforward when both positions meet specialty occupation requirements.
