Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Construction
Verify your role meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires construction roles to demand a specific bachelor's degree, not just any degree. Civil engineering, construction management, and structural engineering titles have the clearest track record. General superintendent or project coordinator roles face higher RFE risk without a matching degree.
Search LCA filings for construction employers
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by LCA filings under construction and engineering occupation codes. This surfaces firms that have already filed for roles like yours, which signals genuine sponsorship infrastructure rather than one-off goodwill.
Target firms enrolled in E-Verify early
E-Verify enrollment is required for STEM OPT employers and federal contractors. Construction firms working on federally funded infrastructure projects are often already enrolled, which streamlines the I-9 and status verification steps when your H-1B petition is filed.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating offers
Your employer must certify your offered wage meets the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and work location on the LCA. Run your role and ZIP code through the OFLC Wage Search before finalizing any offer to confirm the number your employer will need to certify.
Clarify worksite requirements in your petition
Construction work often spans multiple project sites. Your employer must file an amended I-129 or new LCA if your worksite changes to a different metropolitan statistical area. Flag this with your employer before the petition is filed to avoid compliance gaps later.
Use O*NET to build your specialty occupation case
Pull the O*NET profile for your specific job title to document the education and knowledge requirements associated with the role. Adjudicators look for evidence that the position normally requires a specific degree, and O*NET data directly supports that argument.

Find Construction JobsConstruction H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Do construction jobs qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Construction jobs qualify when the specific role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field like civil engineering, construction management, or architecture. Hands-on trade roles, general labor positions, and jobs where any degree satisfies the requirement don't meet USCIS's specialty occupation definition. Roles like project engineer, estimator, or structural designer have the strongest qualification record.
Which construction employers sponsor H-1B visas?
Large general contractors, engineering and design-build firms, infrastructure developers, and construction management consultancies are the most consistent H-1B sponsors in this sector. Firms working on public infrastructure or federal contracts tend to have established HR and immigration compliance teams. Use Migrate Mate to find employers with verified LCA filing history for construction and engineering roles.
What happens if my construction job moves to a different worksite?
If your worksite changes to a different metropolitan statistical area than what was listed on your original LCA, your employer must file a new LCA certified by DOL and, in most cases, an amended I-129 petition with USCIS before you begin work at the new location. Short-term placements have a narrow exception, but ongoing project reassignments typically require the full amendment process.
Can I switch construction employers on an H-1B?
Yes, under H-1B portability rules you can start working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed with USCIS, without waiting for approval, as long as your prior H-1B was approved and you've maintained valid status. Your new employer must file their own LCA and I-129 before your start date. The 60-day grace period after a job ends gives you a window to secure a new filing.
How does the prevailing wage requirement work for construction H-1B roles?
Before filing your H-1B petition, your employer must submit an LCA to DOL certifying that your offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for your specific occupation title and work location. DOL sets four wage levels based on experience and responsibility. You can look up the applicable wage for your role and ZIP code using the OFLC Wage Search to verify your offer aligns before the LCA is submitted.
